Threatening to cancel Sky to get a reduction

Are Sky offering any incentives to save customers who may want to cancel due to the economic recession? Or are they just allowing people to cancel without a fight?

You could call them and go through with it to the very last second and then either change your mind or hang up if they dont offer an incentive to stay

I called a fortnight ago, got through to cancellations. Got a 20% reduction for the next twelve months, it was almost too easy, I didn't even have to put up a fight. It takes the pain away for upgrading to HD. I have Sky Sports and was paying over €60 per month, so 20% reduction is not bad. I just gave out about Sterling and the UK VAT rate, I think it helped that I luckily got through to the Cork call centre. As Mossy says above, it's worth a call.

Yes. Two of my friends called and threatened to cancel sky sports last week and they both received a 20% discount.

I called technical support on Friday and asked for an engineer to replace my Sky+ box (3 month old) as it was giving trouble. The girl said the engineer would call on Monday with a RECONDITIONED box. I let fly at her and she backed down and siad I would get a new box. When I asked about cancelling my service she gave me 20% off as well. :P

Always remember to do that at your own risk...more then likely you will get someone who will go through with the cancellation and then you will look like a right idiot to ring them back up to stop it...Ive seen it happen before.

But surely you will know if the drone will not play ball and hang up?

I got the 20% reduction when I called to cancel sports and movies for the summer - I had every intention of cancelling them but she offered me a choice of the 20% reduction on my bill or half price sports and movies for 3 months - quite a good deal I think.

I canceled Sports for the summer but got no offer of a deal

I just joined back today and cancelled over 2 years ago and they had nothing on their system for me.

Tried to get a reduction by cancelling earlier.

    Wasn't offered this at all.

Not sure whether it's worth trying again? Any ideas why I might not have been offered?

If I got the reduction I'd probably upgrade to HD for the difference in price.

    So did you cancel?

Just seems to depend on who you talk to on the phone. Luck of the draw. Some offer deals, some just process the cancellation.

Hi - I rang and asked about how much my package would cost without Sky sports and the girl I spoke just said 'so will I remove that then?'? Firstly my call was an enquiry and secondly she didn't offer a discount. So I bluntly said I had been a Sky customer for a long time and I've heard of lots of people getting discounts. She then replied that she could give me a 20% discount for 6 months. Hope that helps.

I called a couple of months ago as a longtime Sky Digital customer looking to upgrade to Sky+ but refusing pay the outrageous upgrade cost applicable to existing customers.

I was passed (by Sky) between 3 depts (inc. Sky in Cork and Sky Customer Service who told me that I should inform the cancellation Dept of my dissatisfaction, and that they might be able 'to do something for me'.)

I ended up negotiating with an aggressive and frankly unprofessional employee in the cancellation Dept who accused me in the first instance of trying to deceive Sky's Customer Service Dept by re-registering a new address on my account (not remotely the case!). He then (as a former employee of ntl) proceeded to lecture me on the hidden costs levied by UPC, e.g. service package downgrades and told me not to bother coming back to Sky for at least 12 months as my details would be retained by Sky and I would not be offered any new joining offers.

I was then invited to proceed with my cancellation without any offer of a discount - which I did because I was so frustrated with the guy's attitude and accusatory manner. I was subsequently told in writing that my service would discontinue after 30 days.

In any event, it appears that individual members of the cancellation Dept have a wide degree of latitude as I was told by the same cancellations dept individual I was 'only a basic service customer' --- as if to suggest that I was little more than an inconvenience to Sky....

Since then however, my Sky still works, although I have an annoying warning to insert the new viewing card I've been sent in the interim. Not sure if doing that will cut the service completely though. I have not yet got around to organising UPC. Any ideas?

    Thanks
