Taking my iPhone on holiday

So I'm taking my new baby on holiday tomorrow for a week! Roaming is set to off. Do I need to turn off my e-mail account also? Don't want to rack up any charges. Do I need to turn my account back on if I find a wifi spot?

Nope you'll be fine. When data roaming is off, it won't automatically fetch email and stuff unless you're on wifi. When you are in a wifi area just turn on wifi and connect, the data roaming setting only applies to data over the cellular network.

It is VERY important to not turn on the roaming data feature. A friend of mine went to paris for 4 days and turned it on by mistake. The bill was 630euro for roaming, something like 40 euro per MB. This is criminal if you ask me.... She was looking up to find a restaurant and it cost 80 euro in charges! o2 did give her 50% off when she complained, but still....

Data rates are around €10 a megabyte when roaming. It's hardly criminal when they are clearly indicated on the O2 website and when it's a free market.

still an easy mistake to make..

You know what? Based on the number of threads in the Mobiles/PDA forum that consists of people giving out about "extortionate" fees for roaming, I don't have a lot of time for that argument any more.

Yes, it's damn expensive, borderline extortion if you ask me, but people need to make themselves aware of the cost before they use the service.

Another good option OP is to contact O2 and ask them to disable data on your account until you get back. This way there is nothing you can do to reactivate it.
