Does anyone know where would be a good place to do some hill training in Dublin? Preferably city centre/south side. There are NO hills near me in Ballsbridge....

Kilmashogue or hell fire club a little futher out south side i find are great for strength. City centre wise the Park would spring to mind to

Nearer to the city you could try some training loops around Kiliney hill. The imra goal relay did a nice loop of the park... http://www.imra.ie/events/view/tab/details/id/597/ No map available but if you got to the park you could do a decent loop that suited.

    Try running up Fosters Ave!

    Tina,

Grab a DART to Bray and try Bray Head. Also have a look at the fixtures on the www.imra.ie. Something else might tickle your fancy.

Thanks for the suggestions. All sound really very good, think I'll try each of them over the next couple of months.

Nearer to Ballsbridge if you go to Irishtown Reserve Park there is a hill up to the Park which would be handy for hill sprints, ie only about 100m long. At the top of Sandymount beach just run along the path (perpendicular to the main beach road) for a few hundred yards and you'll get to it.

Thanks Racing Flat. I think I'm v near Irishtown Park so will check that out and I regularly go to the strand but have never noticed the hill there! Have to keep my eyes open next time, sounds good.

    hi

I can confirm Fosters Av is a nice one to do, seen people go there doing reps. I quite like going up, then do a couple of laps in Deer Park for recovery: gorgeous views and a real sense of achievement! but the sandymount hill might be closer to you, very nice hill (although seen some funny characters around, probably would be a bit worried alone)

Thanks scaryfairy. I like the sound of Deer Park. I think I can cycle up there quite easily, so definitely will check it out soon.

might be an idea to lock your bike in UCD: just around the corner, probably safer for your bike, and you can use the loos/get something to drink if in need. then you could head up exiting the campus through Owenstown Park road. anyway, enjoy!

I'd second Fosters Av, but also coming up the other side of the hill from Taney Road to Mount Anville Road up to the top is a nice leg stretcher.

A run or cycle out from Ballsbridge would be a good warmup!

Is there any grass on Foster's ave or is it all paving?

a couple of laps in Deer Park
I used to live right by there - my first run (summer 1996) was to try one lap of the park and I made it to the far end before pulling up exhausted to walk home for a 14 minute or so mile. A lap on the path around the inside perimeter is very very close to one mile. I used to pass the same people walking the other way several times in each run. Got up to 4 laps of almost solid running before ever I ran anywhere else and then realised very quickly that pretty much every run I'd ever do from home would need to end with an uphill. I miss having hills so close (and the sea).

@RJM22: There's some grass between some of the driveway entrances along the side of Foster's Ave, but it's not really runnable because of trees and driveways.

Anyway, my suggestion for a long steady climb is from Dundrum to Sandyford. From the bridge at Milltown it's almost completely uphill to just before Stepaside for over 400m vertical gain. The gradient varies but altogether it's a good climb.

Mount Merrion Avenue, Newtownpark Avenue and Kill Lane are other good urban hills with >100m of height per mile. Actually, anything further south than UCD and you're into the foothills of the Dublin/Wicklow Mountains.
