Films that really came together

Does anyone have a film they love just because all the elements came together so well, the writing, directing, soundtrack score and acting?

For me the perfect example was Darren Aronofsky's "The Fountain."
Beautifully written and directed by Aronofsky, it's a touchingly sad story, totally filled with imagery that complimented the themes and internal mythology of the tale. The score, by Clint Mansell, was a stand alone work of art in itself. Perfectly capturing and complimenting the mood of the film, at times it sent shivers down my spine. Especially the penultimate track "Death is the Road to Awe." At other times, it totally captured the pain and loneliness of the main character played by Hugh Jackman.

Before seeing this film, I never really rated Jackman as an actor, but he completely carried "The Fountain" and gave a stirring performance as both Tommy Creo and the fictional character of the Conquistador within the film's story.

It's one of those films that grows better with repeated viewings, like Fight Club, you take more away from it having seen it before.

i guess the nines wou'd be my choice. I didn't know what to think at the end, but as i thought about it the film kinda clicked and made sense on a few different levels.

Another vote for a classic: Singing In The Rain. :pac:

Fargo has it all, as does Se7en, with American Beauty up there too IMHO..

More recently, Moon had me nodding approvingly: hardly puts a foot wrong in any aspect.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

I thought Irreversible was a lovely film that came together nicely at the end. It all felt like, the screw you've been trying to get into the hole, but wouldn't for ages, finally does.

High Fidelity. May seem like an odd choice but it's the only film I can constantly rewatch and never grow tired of it or find flaws in it or change my opinion of it at all! Perfectly cast, great soundtrack, it's got it all!

    Rocky

Great acting by Burgess Meredith as Mickey, Talia Shire as Adrien and of course Sylvester Stallone as Rocky.
The musical score by Bill Conti is probably one of the greatest out there. It really shows the true emotion of the characters.

Excellent source material, a brilliant adaptation, all round quality acting, superb score, cinematography. A modern classic.

No joke but Kung Fu Panda, watched it again last night. The voice cast, animation, action choreography, soundtrack and art style are wonderful, and it has some big laughs too. Best non-Pixar CGI film IMO

Well said. Stunning film. I especially loved the scenes with "Mon Manege a Moi" in the apartment towards the end. And the end with Beethoven is wonderful.

On a lighter note Back to the Future and it's sequel are absolutely incredible films that wrap so much into the themselves that they create a series of really sublime moments. Marty's going into the situations of the first film within the sequel is impressive.

OP, I too loved the Fountain. It's seems to be a bit of a marmite movie though. I know people who rank it with Batman & Robin as being that bad.

Also, what are we talking about here in regards to films that "came together"... are we discussing Portmanteau films, that have converging and diverging tangents?

Hehe, nope, nothing so intelligent. I just meant one's in which all the elements came together really well. Writing, directing, casting, acting, soundtrack. That kinda thing.

All brilliant movies. Especially Taken, which could have been another straight to DVD crash, bang wallop movie, but i was very impressed with Neeson in it.

Jaws, it was meant to be shlocky horror with giant shark, but the shark didnt work so it became a hugely atmospheric thriller with the best example of how to make a 3 act structure in a movie ever, also started the summer blockbuster phenomenon

the usual suspects , it all came together perfectly yet unexpectedly at the end

The Fountain is an amazing film. The soundtrack is immense and the actual look of it mekes it one of the most beautidul movies i've ever seen.

Also agree with True Romance and High Fidelity, two of my top three movies of all time.

Looking for a movie that hasn't been mentioned yet, i'd have to say Goodfellas. The script is brilliant, the acting is second to none, particularly De Niro.

Yep, agree with the marmite comment re: the fountain. Absolutely hated it, fell asleep watching it.

Pans Labyrinth would be my choice
