    The Garda Ombudsman has begun an investigation into the death of a retired Garda in a shooting incident in Co Leitrim.
    A statement from An Garda Síochána said the Garda was in Carrick-on-Shannon Garda Station when he died in an incident involving an official firearm.
    No-one else was involved in the incident.
    The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

    The State Pathologist's office has been informed and a post mortem examination is due to be carried out tomorrow at Sligo General Hospital.

    A recently retired garda shot himself in his former station.

    The man was in Carrick-on-Shannon garda station in Co Leitrim in relation to his former role when he shot himself dead shortly before 10am.

    A garda spokesman confirmed the incident involved an official firearm.

    “No other Garda member was involved in the incident,” he added.

    The former officer, who is in his mid 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

    The State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy has been notified.

    A post mortem examination is scheduled for tomorrow morning at Sligo General Hospital.

    The Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission is investigating the incident.

    It begs the question as to how a retired member would have such easy access to firearms.

    Hate the headlines alot of online/radio places are using,"garda shot dead in garda station", gets my attention for sure, i guess thats what theyre aiming for
