5 Easy but gorgous piano pieces.

Pieces like Erik Saties Gynopedie no1.

any one got a few more that I could learn?

For my 1st year exams I (sorta lazily) played the Mozart Sonata Facile in C and 2 Bach Inventions.

It's really more based on the progress you made. If you took up a new instrument - in addition to your 'real' - and played a grade 2/3 standard flawlessly, you'd get a first.

Couldn't just pick up an instrument from the very beginings and work on that particular instrument? Or id have to have my Guitar as my Real instrument?

Well, what instrument do you play already?

    I'm confused......

    Did I miss something? :o

But anyways.....try Satie's Gnossiennes (spelling?) particularly No. 5.

Have a look at his other Gymnopedie as well.

This is a gorgeous and easy enough Chopin prelude

See....the thing is Satie was way ahead of his time with those pieces, and they are quite unique. Debussy might appeal to you, but I can't think of anything easy he wrote.....

    ****ed my arse!

Commitment to an instrument is key to learning! Try not to feel down at a lack of progress, remember this is supposed to be FUN!

Practice regularly and WELL! A focused 20 mins is far more beneficial than 1hr of doodling.

You said it yourself, slowly but surely. Once you have a routine in place, you'll see steady progress. (putting there is that hardest part. If you lose it, it can be hard to get on track again - i'm in one of those slumps right now! :( ).

DON'T RUSH! I started about 5 years ago and rushed through my grades, ignoring technique and I now have a tension problem (had tendinitis for the best part of a year).

Basically, relax and enjoy your instrument. Don't worry and have fun learning to play music you love! :)

Oh feck I just realised this is the NUIM forum!!! I thought it was Classical....

    Everything makes sense now..... :o

    Is this for BMus?

Or are you doing it for fun?

but is it ok to go into a course, without a classical instrument? I just have guitar...

    Oh good lord yes!

Thats more than I can say for a couple of people in my course! You'll be absolutely fine, don't worry. :)

1st year is about bringing everyone to the same level (or attempting to). I won't lie, there will be people in the course who are better musicians. Thats life. There is ALWAYS someone better than you.

What you need to do is focus on being the best musician YOU can be. You sound eager to start, which is half the battle. Just make sure you're doing this for YOUR benefit, not to make someone else happy.

You have a whole year to find your pieces and perfect them for the practicals. Your teacher will help you with this, so don't worry.

I guarantee you will see rapid progression in your musicality in first year if you completely immerse yourself in teh course.

If you go with guitar as your first instrument, you will have to play suitable pieces, ie classical pieces, and you'll have to get a classical guitar (nylon strings).

Again, I really can't stress this enough....don't worry.
