Right, the father has a HP pavilion (dv9500) laptop. There are two drives on it, standard C drive and a recovery d drive. The D drive is 18gb in size, and is constantly askiung for a backup, but it fails due to it being full. Have never had a recovery drive before so not sure what to do with it, maybe increase the size of it to allow the backup or somethingg? the father will get flustered with all these warnings coming up.

Which program keeps requesting a back-up? I've an HP6599 with the same D: recovery drive and have never been asked to do a back-up.

Perhaps something is suggesting that you create recovery dvd disks?

The D: restore partition wouldn't be used for a back-up location anyway, it probably being the optimum size for the purpose of a restore, and nothing else.

The computer keeps wanting to make a backup, it does this on regular occasions, but lately he's getting the following message:

There is not enough space to save the backup files. Free up disk space or change your backup settings.

It doesnt mention burning a dvd back up at any stage, so i'm wondering should i delete everything that has been backed up to date, and make a back up then, or increase the size of the backup.

He's probably been jiggling around in the Vista back-up utility in the control panel, where the location of the back-up is decided. If he's got an external drive, or wants the back-up on dvds, he should change the settings to either of those two drives. There's also the option of a USB flashdrive for backing up.

I don't use that utility, instead preferring Terabyte Image For Windows.

cheers for the advice lads, turned off the automatic thing there. He backs stuff up on an external alright, the recovery thing was just throwing him, and me too, have no experience with vista.
