    It's driving me insane..

I can get any .ie but not one .com

Thought it might be quicker to get advice here than trying Vodafone!
I did check their site but no news about this!

I'm guessing it's the same problem that occurred with eircom last week in other words a DNS error. Thats why some sites work and others don't. Just have to wait it out for the moment. It's too early for people to post on a saturday morning ;) But the boards and news will be full soon!!!

It's probably not DNS. Can anyone using Vodafone/perlico mobile internet run a tracert to the following websites:

    www.ebay.com
    www.twitter.com
    www.play.com

Also, see if you can access www.microsoft.com

(run a tracert by holding down the windows key and R, type in "cmd", then type tracert, then a space, then the website in the black box that appears. Google it for more info.)

Copy and paste one or all of the tracerts. Right click the window, select mark, drag over the area you want to copy and then right click. Paste in the reply window here.

I think the problems with the Vodafone mobile broadband are at least partially related to this thread: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055630670 Vodafone own perlico and they share a lot of the same internet infrastructure.

After you go Run > Cmd you get a black DOS window on your screen.

    - You then don't use cmd any more - just enter the text in red below.....

    Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
    (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
    C:\Documents and Settings\Fox>tracert www.microsoft.com

    - Gimme the list of websites you want to access and I'll post IP addresses!!!

In Internet Explorer or Firefox address bar type in > 208.67.219.99

Click on the "Start using Open DNS" button

    - And then follow the detailed and easy to follow instructions on screen.

Should be a 2 minute fix.....

I assume you didn't read my post. It's not a DNS problem!! Vodafone/Perlico are having serious routing issues today. Look at the "perlico speed issue" thread in the broadband forum.

Anyway, do you want to try that tracert thing again, as my explanation was very hurried eariler? When you get to:
    Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
    (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
    C:\Documents and Settings\Fox>

you type the following into the black window "tracert www.ebay.ie". No quotation marks:) So you'll end up with (as Raiser showed you) C:\Documents and Settings\Fox>tracert www.ebay.ie

It's a piece of cake once you type it in. Just copy and paste by right clicking, then select mark. Then click and drag over the area like you're making a box to select the text. Then right click on the selected text, and it's ready to be pasted straight away.

Then that goes http://69.63.184.143 I'm guessing that is facebook's IP address and this is just a sneaky way to get there?

My blackberry (also on 087) is working fine. So I presume it's just an issue with the hs.vodafone.ie apn.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,235 ✭✭✭lucernarian

The copying/pasting the number into the browser won't make any difference or help figure out the problem.

The tracert results you guys posted show up a similar yet different problem to what I'm having. If I ping www.twitter.com etc, mine reach a different number and then also have repeated request timed outs.

I've found it's websites outside of Ireland and the UK that are causing issues.

After a lot of trying around, the websites that work are irish and british hosted ones, along with international websites that are served by akamai.

What akamai do is explained here (Amid much marketing babble)http://www.akamai.com/html/technology/edgeplatform.html. They've got a server in Ireland which "hosts" a number of big companies' websites.

Anyway, it seems that the problems Vodafone/Perlico DSL customers are experiencing, and the mobile internet customers are experiencing, are similar but not the same. I can fix my problems if I reset the router once or twice (and get a different IP client and server address), so maybe mobile bb customers should disconnect and reconnect their modems to see if it helps.

Once again, DNS isn't the problem and it's nothing got to do with eircom's outage as reported on rte etc.

    I'm still on .ie only!!
    Can get on to .co.uk
    Still no .com

Have tried disconnecting and reconnecting the modem, no difference!

So my night is as follows:

    RTE 1 Lucky Sh*te
    RTE 2 Some old 007
    TV3 GAA or summat
    TG4 Survivor

    oh and boards.ie......

If I had a bottle of whiskey now I'd be sorted!

    Still the same today!

Was just on to Vodafone, they have people working on it and hope to get it back up and running asap!

I was having the same issues on vodafone DSL but changed my network settings to the Level3 DNS servers:

    4 . 2 . 2. 1
    4 . 2 . 2 . 6

All seems to be working correctly now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,235 ✭✭✭lucernarian

You're lucky. When I first had the problem, I changed from Level3 to Perlico/Vodafone's DNS. That seemed to solve the problem. It didn't:) Sometime today or tomorrow (unless it's fixed) you'll have the same problem again.

When you change DNS, the router restarts itself. The restart sometimes fixes the problem, not the DNS change. Have a look at the main thread http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055630670

Once again, changing DNS won't work, a router restart might, if you are using Vodafone/Perlico DSL Mobile bb users will have to sit back and wait, so it seems.

Is it working again for any people here?
