Hey, am thinking of going to Budapest for a few days. The problem is can't drink beer and spirits. Anybody know any drinks there that would be wheat free, can tolerate barley but definitely not lager.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicum

There are also some reasonable Hungarian wines (and some pretty rough ones).

    Hi,
I have lived and worked in Budapest for a long time.
Their wines are fab. You can pick up a decent red or white in a Spar shop for about €4. They do a selection of local fruit juices too which are devine.

Have you found a place to stay? I reccommend the Agape apartments on afaka ut or the Locust tree apartemts on the same street. It is on the pest region and a 100 meter walk to the metro station that serves the main red line.

Food there is very cheap so is the cost of living.

Defo go to Becketts bar at Nyugati and also to Morrisons 2 night club, you will enjoy it. A trip to Margaret Island is a must also to the Castle for the most breath taking views of Budapest. Also try a bath over there, The best is in the City Park, a complete yellow building....

You will see Hungarians drinking shots of Unicum, stay away form it. It is truly brutal. It tastes like a beef stock, very thick beef stock. its best served chilled form the freezer.
Alcohol is very cheap over there.
They are famous for their schnapps, which is furit brandies.

If you have any questions don hesitiate to ask....

I think every visitor should try it.

    Then stay away from it.

You have to try it. Have 2 or 3, it keeps you regular! A bit like Becherovka in Czech Rep
