I have been given an old Dell Latitude Laptop CPX .

It has 12GB HD and 128MB Ram.

It also has Windows XP professional OS
It only has one USB connection and I dontn think it has a Wi-Fi card

Is it ready for the skip , or should I spend some money on it ?

Ready for the skip tbh. It's probably around 7/8 years old. Not worth it. You can buy netbooks for around the 180/200 euro mark that would be far better and new.

The original hard-drive will probably be on it's last legs after 7 odd years. You could waste time and money getting it running only for the HDD to go kaput. And to get a 'new' HDD of that era will be very hard.

Also, it doesnt have an Ethernet port or wireless, so you'd have to shell out for a PCMCIA card to get it online.

It would suffice as a web-browsing machine if you put a lightweight linux OS on there, but you'd have to weigh up the cost an ethernet or wireless PCMCIA card (and possibly a new HDD).

If you have some sort of use for a basic web-browsing machine (backup etc) it might be worth getting it up and running, but I wouldn't put much money into it. Probably ready for the skip as Alan says above.

If you have any interest in seeing how to disassemble a laptop, it would be a good starting point. Would get you familiar with the process of getting it stripped down to bare parts, dunno maybe its just me but I'd use it to tinker on... or slam dunk it into a skip.
