Intimidating, Scary Pieces?

Hi there,

Lately I've been trying to broaden my musical horizons - in particular I've found electronic and classical music interesting.

Shostakevich interested me a lot.I'm looking for badass, intimidating classical music - lots of oomph. One of my favourite pieces was this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzNfiOZluD4

To be honest though, i'm clueless when it comes to Classical - I've no idea how to find this music or anything like it.Can you guys recommend something like this for me?

You'd probably like Sergei Prokofiev. His 2nd piano concerto is incredible I think. He wrote it just after a close friend committed suicide. This is the 3rd movement with a very strong and dramatic opening. Listen through the other movements though.

You'll recognise this piece from his Romeo & Juleit suite too. Sounds better on piano solo than for full orchestra

these are some I played recently with ucd symphony! But you really need to hear them live to get the real atmosphere and all that!! Especially the Dvorak!

That second one that you mentioned - PhiliousPhogg - is Montagues and Capulets. There are more intimidating versions of it that I've heard! Strangely-enough, it was the first piece that came to my mind when reading the OP's message.

I prefer the passacaglia from the end of the second act of the same ballet. Seriously frightening stuff - and hearing it live blows your mind.

PP - you really prefer the piano version to the orchestral?

Oh, also meant to say, I haven't been able to find a recording of that passacaglia online. The whole ballet's worth it, though.

How about the Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz? I think the movement is called "March to the scaffold" though I'm open to correction on this.

It was used to great effect in "Sleeping with the Enemy."
