Roganstown's a Disappointment?

Did a quick search and to my surprise there’s not much about Roganstown’s on the forum.

I played it recently and must say after my round driving home I wasn’t overly impressed with the course. I felt the course was a little over the top. Every green is guarded, with either bunkers or water (on the front 9, if I recall correctly), I don’t think there’s anything wrong with difficult courses but as I said previously I felt things were over the top. I did find the course overly wet, but to be fair we have had a lot of rain recently. It’s a relatively long course especially when the wind kicks in.

I felt the course didn’t sit into the areas natural environment, it was a little artificial, maybe gimmicky is the word. I realise Christy O’Connor designed the course and maybe he and the management though they had to do something totally different to make Roganstown’s stand out from the crowd, as Dublin is densely populated with courses many as we know are top quality.

Although my thoughts are somewhat negative on Roganstown’s I will play the course again within the next couple of months to give the place a fair assessment but my initial impressions aren’t so good.

I was interested does anyone else feel the same??

I thought it was fine, it's been discussed a few times. Nice mix of holes, wouldn't say it was at all over the top. Didn't feel it was out of place either, it was only half new with parts of it taken from some of the swords open holes. All in all an average to good parkland course, very similar to plenty of others, not sure what makes it stand out from the crowd as you say.

Not a bad course..but in the overall scheme of things not a course you would RUSH back to play.

Front nine ..areas around the green a little neglegted ..smelled a little of lack of cash.

Back nine ...above average in my opinion..nice use of water..greens well maintained.

Good test ..but not STAND OUT...mmmmm jury out

Getting married next year and the reception is in Roganstown. Got a free four ball as part of the package and trying to get back into golf (Played it on and off since I was about 12, 28 now). Only played a par3 course in Swords this week and that was my first round in about 4 years! Bittin by the Golf bug again though! I view myself as a beginner in golf and was wondering if Roganstown is a tough course for a beginner? Also does anyone know of any courses around the Swords area for beginners ie Membership fees etc? Cheers

Roganstown doesnt quite live up to its hype. Dont get me wrong, its a nice course, with a few nice holes and well looked after - admittedly, I havent played it this year, but played it 7/8 times last year, so perhaps its come on since then - have to remember that its a realitively new course - apart from 6 holes with had some work done to them, so its still maturing. Only for the fact that I know a few members there, I wouldnt be forking out the money to play there in a hurry every week!!

Played Luttrellstown Castle on Wednesday morning, and it is a smashing course!! Is it a secret or something, cos no one told me!! Never hear anyone talk about it, which im really surprised about!!

    Off topic....

    1. Can anyone confirm that Luttrellstown is closing this year - shame if it is - was telling one of my mates about playing it and how good it was, and he said, he heard its closing??
anyone know of any courses around the Swords area

    2. Swords Open, Roganstown's older sister is only across the road!! (they robbed 6 holes off Swords Open)

If you are in Roganstown, come out the gate, turn left, you'll see the 16th green of Swords Open 100 yards up the road on your right as you cross the bridge - take the first right, just after the bridge, and its up the road about 500 yards on your right hand side!
20 quid a round on the weekdays - course is in decent shape and isnt too difficult.

Theres also a good few within a 15 - 20 min drive of Roganstown or Swords village - I'll start the list....

Donabate, Corballis (links), Beaverstown, Turvey, Balcarrick (all in the Donabate direction)
    Malahide and Portmarnock (links)
    Ashbourne
    St Margarets, Corrstown, Silogue

Some maybe not the cheapest, but sometimes you get a few deals on teetimes.ie

Yes, unfortunately it’s closing for definite. Can’t wait to get out there, only been around the grounds, it’s still hard to imagine they’ll let that great course go to hell, suppose if it’s not making money than fair enough however if they market the course differently and maybe try to attract more society golfers they could keep afloat…? I did think when it was first announced that it was a publicity stunt to get the course a bit of exposure but the staff are adamant that the course is definitely closing.

I must retract my comments on Roganstown…

I played the course for a second time and must say I enjoyed myself. Christy has done a lot of mounding there but the course does fit into its natural surroundings (something I commented about before). Bunkers are by the edges of most greens so if you stray at all around the fringes expect to be in one. I ended up in a deep bunker on the 16th, must say it was good fun playing out of it. Its a long course, quite open and you can bang away with the driver. The last time I played here I was blown off the course and wasn’t playing the best which may explain some of my poor comment. Some long par 3's, guarded by water, it's fair though, and a good test for all golfers.

Second time round I totally change my opinion on the course!

Any word on membership out there Jimjo? I heard a rumour of €1500 a year, but see nothing about it on the website.

According to the search facility on the GUI website the membership is €1439 for Roganstown with no joining fee.

Cannot find this information on their website though.

From what I hear you can get in without a joining fee, like someone else quoted, less than €1500 a year (playing rights). Corrstown are doing the same.

An interesting course but needs to mature, like so many of the new breed. For once, Christy didn't get carried away with the mounding.

    Here are some photos
