No logbook for a car

Anybody have any ideas about cars with no logbooks.
Seems like the buddy is after getting scammed a little, bought the car with the garage promising that the logbook was on its way. 2 1/2 months later it looks like there is no logbook at all and the garage who sold it seem to not be answering.
Is there some way of getting a new logbook?

You can check if the car actually changed ownership here in the last 3 months:

Other than that your friend will need to go into the garage, don't wait for them to answer the phone. If the garage don't get the finger out then a few trips through the M50 toll may wake them up.

Correct. The car is still registered with them so they'll get all the fines.

A garage will not take the ownership. They'll hold the log book in the office in the previous owners name and transfer it to the new buyer when its sold.

Go to the Garda don;t hang about on this as the car is legally not yours until your name is on the book. end of. Very foolish to buy the car without it.

Not necessarily. My current car was registered as being owned by a dealer until I bought it and it was changed into my name

Yeah the car was bought in the good faith of the log book being posted out and since that she has been getting the run around. First from the garage it was brought from and then from the next garage. Looks like it went from owner to garage to another garage and then to the girl.
Both garages now seem to be content in shrugging the shoulders and actually avoiding calls. No sign of a log book still though.
Other than explaining situation to gardai she is getting very upset.

Had the very same problem recently myself Forcefield. Bought car privately of somebody who seems to deal in cars part-time to a greater or lesser extent. Log book was not forth-coming and every time I rang him story was a bit different on who had the logbook...I was originally lead to believe he had it in his possession. I emailed vehicle liscensing department in Shannon and they sent me a form which can be used to apply for transfer of ownership in such circumstances. The form would have to be stamed by a main dealer after they check vehicle to ensure chassis number on it corresponds with the vehicle aind number plate. This would probably be around 50 quid I think give or take (give or take a lot maybe!). Then the form would need to be signed by a solicitor or Peace Commissioner/ Commissioner of Oaths...again around 50 quid maybe I'm thinking.

In my own case I believe Shannon have now received log book to go into my own name so I hope I do not need to follow the above procedure.

    Sounds better Stevie.
Were you waiting long for the logbook to come back from Shannon?

Has you friend rang the gardai to see if the car was stolen ?
No log book and the garage not answering their phones sounds a bit fishy (remember cars are often stolen with keys these days) !

    Good point actually Santa.
She mentioned that alright but I think thats what might be stalling her from contacting cops. She is afraid that the car would be taken off her.
What happens if the car is stolen?

If the car is stolen it's confiscated by the Gardai and returned to it's owner or to the insurance company if they've already paid out on it. She can try to sue the garage for the return of her money if that's the case !

Can she not call in to the garage personally rather than ringing them ? Bringing a large male friend with her when she drives to the garage might also help convey the urgency of them needing to produce the logbook or else taking the car back and returning her money!

Are they an SIMI garage ? If so ring the SIMI and try to get them to lean on the garage !

Shannon are processing it at the moment Forcefield. Their turnaround is very quick presently or at least had being up to a few weeks ago. When I rang them a few weeks back they told me they were processing mail that had come in the day before. I know my logbook was sent in Wednesday (22nd of July) so would be expecting to receive it before the end of next week.

Regarding car being stolen, certainly a possibility but unlikely all the same even if they are only a half reputable garage. Whereas an individual selling a car privately may get away with this I'd be shocked if a garage expected to. Then again stranger things have happened...don't necessairly rule it out either. Probably more likley that they are lazy at getting the log book from previous owner (although they should have got it alreaddy) or have mislaid it and too lazy to look for it. To threaten em with the Gardai and/or SIMI if they are registered with them may work wonders

It happened a friends brother. He bought a car off a half reputable garage. A few weeks later the gardai arrived and took the car away as it was stolen leaving the mates bro to sue the dealer.

They should have it, and send it to Shannon when the car is sold.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 47 Forcefield

    Yes
Which was the case when she bought the car. She was promised that it was in the post and after a few weeks and constant phone calls it turns out that they actually did not get a logbook with it. So on to the next garage who are now avoiding the subject altogether.

I don't get it how you guys are buying cars without a logbook??

If the car is legit, ok you can get sorted out afterwards if the previous owner does not give it to you, but that's lots of time and money lost.
If not, you just lost your new-ex car.

You should not walk away with a car you just bought if not signed the logbook, as the new owner, with the document in your pocket or sent through registered letter in the post office.

I'd never even consider buying a car without all the necessary documents.

Yea, I have to say, I'd need to see the actual book so I could verify the service history.
No book - no history, and thats a mess you don't want to inherit.

OP, I guess the lesson has been learnt the hard way here - so I won't harp on about it.
But I'd be calling into the dealer everyday and making a BIG stink in front of as many potential customers as possible.
    Every day.
    Until the book's produced.
