Hull ISP cuts off suspected file sharers

Humberside internet service provider (ISP) Karoo has started cutting off customers suspected of illegal file-sharing, as part of a 'three strikes' policy aimed at cutting piracy. Skip related content
According to reports, customers disconnected by the provider have been sent a formal notification, and must sign a document admitting guilt and promising not to do it again in order to be reconnected.
Users continuing to illegally share and download content could face permanent disconnection after a third violation.
The move has been slammed by the Open Rights Group (ORG), an organisation set up to preserve and promote 'digital rights'. The group pointed out that there is no legal procedure or right of appeal taking place, and that there are no other telecoms companies in Hull, limiting the option of moving to another provider.
"People are being found guilty by a Kang-Karoo court," said Jim Killock, executive director of the ORG.
"Internet access is crucial for freedom of expression in the digital age. It's also how people do business and gain an education. A monopoly like Karoo cannot be allowed to arbitrarily decide when to limit our fundamental rights. Only courts can do that."

yeah, was just reading that on the register.

i guess that's one more reason not to move to hull then. like we needed any more. ;)

What do they think theyre going to get out of it apart from loss of customers, bankruptcy and a pat on the back from the mpaa and the riaa.

I wonder how they decide if someones filesharing, do they just monitor torrents to do they look at exactly what everyones downloading?

Was this their First or Third strike?? Well they can be reconnected if they promise not to do it again.

They'll get rid of the bandwidth vampires known as torrent users and with a health sales drive take on several new average use customers in to replace every one of the torrenters. More money made for the same amount of bandwidth used. :)

heavy internet use is what drives broadband speeds forward.

you don't need 20mbps to book a ryanair flight or watch youtube videos.

the more people make use of it the faster it gets, simple as that.

Karoo is the only ISP available in hull, Think Hull is the only place in the UK without a BT line.

So they tried to take advantage of the fact they have a monopoly in that area. They just didnt think they would get such a backlash from the public.

That theory works well until the average user discovers the benefits of torrents and everyone becomes a vampire.

True but the day in Ireland when EVERYONE understands torrents will be a hilarious one!
And come on lets call a spade a spade file sharing is for getting movies and music for free. lol. Thats it like. 90% if not more. All these people like Pirate party and screeching on about civil liberties are only conning the people why dont know better. To be that naive and believe that torrent users are only giving out about civil liberties and not ACTUALLY having their free music and movies taken away is just ill informed on what torrents are REALLY all about.

Its as blatant as seeing a scobe in his burberry cap and nike polyester tracksuit driving round in a range rover on 22"'s. I dont think anyone drives past him and thinks .... "thank god for civil liberties and he allowed his SSIA mature" lol.
