An unholy war has broken out between one of Ireland’s top bookmakers and a Canadian rival over the future of the Rathkeale, Co Limerick, tree stump.

A Canadian online casino, GoldenPalace.com, has made a bid of CAD$5,000 (€3,200) for the tree stump in which some people can see an image of the Virgin Mary.

But Irish bookie, Paddy Power, has branched out from its usual betting fare, and vowed to beat the Canadian offer.

The Canadians already own Pope Benedict’s old VW Golf along with a slice of toast allegedly bearing the face of the Virgin Mary and now want to add the tree stump to its portfolio of strange religious objects.

Paddy Power’s offer of €6,200 yesterday is to be put in writing to the Rathkeale parish priest, Canon Joseph Dempsey, and will remain open until the end of the August.

“We don’t want to see our holy tree stump paraded around the world in some kind of carnival of the bizarre alongside a mouldy slice of toast. If we are successful with our bid we will endeavour to preserve the tree stump and make it accessible for all those who choose to visit it. You can bet on it,” said Paddy Power.

The bookie is also taking bets on where the next sighting of the Blessed Virgin in Ireland will be.The Knock Shrine is the favourite at 5/1 followed by holy mountain, Croagh Patrick, at 12/1. Ballinspittle, the site of moving statues, came in at 33/1 and next week’s Galway Races at 100/1.
