    Good morning,

I am up to 12 mile lsr's and don't have the time / inclination to plant a bottle of water pre run. I also want to start experimenting with gels. So, from your collective experience, what is the best belt, in terms of comfort, capaciousness, value etc. One that was fairly inconspicuous.

Also where to but, website etc.

    Thanking you in advace.

I have a Nathan Elite 1+ (which I think Pekham recommended originally) and it has worked out great for the last 12 months.

Nor sure where to buy it, but they have it here for £20.

Plus 1 from me on this one! Even though I lost the bottle, or rather someone in my gym borrowed it permanently .

I should be on commission from the manufacturers for this! I bought it on Amazon - they probably still stock it.

I got one just like that in Aldi for a couple of quid. It came with a small bottle, but I can get a 750ml of my own in no probelm. It has a zip pocket for keys and gels too

I got one in LIDL for around €7 last year. I did have to get the OH to shorten it a bit as I got skinnier. It has Velcro and 4 small bottles, approx 500ml total. Very comfortable.
The OH also picked up another belt in a Lifestyle bargain bin which has 2 large + 1 small bottle, approx 500ml total, plus a couple of pockets. It has one of those click type plastic buckles. It's bulkier and heavier than the LIDL one, but equally comfortable. I used both belts in last year's marathon, changing just after halfway with a little assistance from my son.
I bring drinks for any run longer than about 30 min. I can run for longer without drinking, but I find I feel much better the next day if I drink plenty during the run. Some of my cycling buddies used to slag me for carrying an extra bottle in my back pocket as well as two on the bike, at least one of these same buddies begged me for a drink near the end of a long race - I was so tempted to say no!

thanks very much for the feeback guys, this has really put me on the right track. Has anyone used the Nathan Speed 2. It seems to have gotten some very good reviews, namely here and here .

There is a four bottle one aswell but I'm not sure I need 4 bottles.

They also come in a lovely pink colour which I believe would look quite dashing as I gracefully bound through the streets. On that note, not that I'm vain or anything, but do these things look ridiculous?

Yarp, I run > 8 milers with one although mine has one large and one smaller (than in that link) bottle. I like it, pretty easy to grab and replace the bottles on the fly. The pouch at the back for gels and keys. I wouldn't wear it racing as it's not feather light. A friend gave mine to me at mile 20 in a marathon last year and it felt like he'd given me a tool belt. I immediately regretted taking it, however, for normal training runs it's fine. Last thing I'll say is that for long runs of say 18 - 22 miles you might find it doesn't hold enough liquid. That's where the four bottle one would be better, but that does look a little Arnie Commando-esq. Personally, I get away with the two bottles but it's not really enough.

    Hi Osnola,

I forgot to make the point that it's no harm to weigh yourself before and after long runs to make sure you're not getting dehydrated. I lost 2.5kg on my LSR about 3 weeks ago (I drank 1 litre during the run) and it wasn't a particularly sunny day. Apparently you lose a lot of moisture through breathing as well as sweating - when I run I do lots of both!!

I did an 8 miler this morning and weighed myself before, 12st 6lbs and after, 12st 3lbs. But I was always under the impression that you can rehydrate to previous levels after the run. But you have to be loosing some weight in fat anyway right?

I've tried various water belts over the years and I've never been quite happy with them. On longer runs I use a small Camelbak (my model is a couple of years old "Siren" ~ 1.5 litres capacity). There's room for my wallet and keys. I'd recommend it. Great on the bike too.

I don't think losing weight in fat is an instantaneous thing. It's more gradual, and in many cases, over a period of time, the weight you lose in fat you will gain in muscle, so there isn't much of a net loss. Most of what you lose during a run is through perspiration.

Funnily enough, on the subject if drink belts, the one I've been using for 14 months just wouldn't fit me properly on my 18 mile run on Sunday. It just kept wriggling free of it's normal position, and I was getting so frustrated, I just wanted to throw it away!
