Are there many people doing the Beast of the East tri this weekend?

Slightly regretting signing up. It'll be a case of surviving the bike and trying to catch a few people on the run. Next year I'll be more prepared.

    I'm in.

While I've very modest time expectations, I really enjoyed this last year (well, maybe not the first 2km of the run....).

Yes maybe some showers. Hopefully overnight rain will have well cleared by time we arrive in Lough Dan . I usually use BBC prediction window below

    Me too.
Accuweather are giving gusts of up to 78km/h for the Wicklow region!! Maybe the mountains will give some shelter? That SSW wind means it'll be against you all the way out to the turnaround point beyond Laragh. Luckily enough most of that is downhill tho and it means we should have it on our back on the return leg.
Good luck all those taking part!

It was very hot last year. The water stations were a life saver. Last year I said I'd train hard and prepare well. Didn't quite go to plan. Here's to Beast of the East 2010!

Ill be participating rather than racing since Im down for Eireman in August. As a result I reckon it'll be enjoyable (and a welcome break from solo stuff).

Dont think it'll be all that warm on sunday. Was up around there for mid week spin during heavy downpour. Its going to be different ;) Id imagine Wicklow TRI will try to rid alot of the bike course of debris anywhere near hot spots and dodgy turns.

I said this on another thread but be careful if you are planning on putting your cycle shoes on before mounting the bike. There is a 300m run on grass up to the mount point and if its wet it could get messy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 265 ✭✭Conor20

I'm doing it. I'm looking forward to the cycle most, I do a lot of cycling in the mountains around there so it'll be great race it. You always go faster with the motivation of a race behind you.

Hopefully the roads won't be wet. Fast descents are a little less pleasent when there's a risk of the front wheel sliding from underneath you..

    Conor.

Was a tough day in the office indeed.. Fairly dissapointed with my time. Did 2:34 in Athy and 3h08 today.:(. I started the swim at the back of Wave2, and i guess stayed at the back until the finish line.
After pouring rain in the morning, the weather clearer up at 8:15. Sun was shining on the lake during the swim. The cycle was hard, with some nasty hills and strong head wind in some parts. The run was very hilly as well, especially the one at km1.
I am glad to have signed for Eireman HIM before today's race, as otherwise i am not sure i should have signed!

Rob (WheelWorx ) already posted some photos on flickr
And for once, i am in, thanks Rob.

Thanks to all organisers and volunteers. There were marshalls at every junctions, bumps, rams along the way. And the BBQ was very welcome after 3h+ on the go.

Almost identical times...2 40 in Athy, 3 07 today....very tough...I'll never get used to the first couple of km of the run.

    See you at Eireman!

I wouldn't beat yourself comparing Athy (the fastest course) with BoTE. I would say that the swim was a "good" 1500 and the bike and run were tough. Factor in long transitions on squelchy grass and you're not going to be looking at a fast course.

It was a tough race, but for me it was probably the most enjoyable/satisfying all year :)

Indeed, i think there are at the 2 extreme end of the spectrum: Athy is sold as being the fastest, BoTE as being the thoughest (or one of). But still, i was not expecting 35min difference.

Interesting what you say about the swim, as i felt it was more than 1500m. I am not a fast swimmer, but comfortable at all time and quite consistent with timing. I would swim 1500m in 30-31min. I think i came about of the water in 36min. Looking forward to get the split times.

I would estimate the swim as nearer 1700m based on my time.

    I got round in 2:41:46.

Would have been happy with 2:45 so a real good day at the office.
    Loved those hills.
    Race report to follow.

Swim was GPS'ed at 1500m. I think there was curent on the way back that slowed people down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 480 ✭✭n-dawg

Wow what a fantastic race:D It was well planed, plenty of marshals (especially on the dangerous decent), was exactly as sold from the website, a great transition area, good food after and great atmosphere!

I think the swim was probably 1500m but most tri's have short swims or downstream swims which made it seem long.

Will defo do this one again :p

2.39 happy enough with it. Could have swam harder but dont have the confidence yet to do so.
Enjoyed the bike. And the run after the first 2km, not cos of the hill, but cos of that feeling of running the bike out of the legs.
Superbly marshalled and excellent event. Thanks to all.

    Havn't been posted yet.
Should be on the wicklowtri website/Beast of East.
Hopefully they'll be out by this evening.
    Fingers Crossed.

From the winners times the "course" was 7-8 mins quicker than last year.
I would say that 4-5 mins of that was the swim which was considerably more difficult last year. But cant say for sure till we see the split times.

Another great event oganised by these guys.

I have been on most of the courses over the past 3 years in Ireland and BoE is the hardest on the circuit (Olympic distance only).

I left my TT bike at home and decided to use my Road Bike as I didnt like the heavy winds and rain (slick tyres on carbon wheels). I am glad I took the road bike still as there were some nasty crashes out on the course. That said I love a challenge and I really struggled / tested myself on the bike route. One thing is for sure. I'll be practicing my hills for next year.

    A great race.

When you look at the mess of other races this year (you know what races they are!!) its great to see the following:

A well run club supported 100% by its members who gave their time on a ****ty Sunday morning to put on a great race. Wicklow Tri should be proud of themselves. They have restored something that lacks in some tri events...a sense of community, comradery and hospitality.

I’ll be back next year for my burger!!

    Results are here

    Some statistics from the results
    x Swim Trans1 Cycle trans2 run finish
    Average 0:35:09 0:03:02 1:22:05 0:02:25 0:49:24 2:52:06
    Min 0:22:47 0:01:37 1:02:31 0:01:17 0:37:28 2:12:40
    Max 0:55:29 0:07:03 1:55:26 0:04:41 1:16:02 4:09:11

I now know where i need to focus my training: on the swim and on the cycle and on the run!.

Interestingly enough, in my last triathlon (Athy), my swim was marginally better than average, so was my cycle and my run was slighly over. Overall, i finished 20sec below average time.
This time, i am +4min above avg in swim, +5min for cycle and +7min for run, averall +16min above the average.
So, it looks like the participants are more competitive....or that i don't like hills.

You also need to factor in the fact that alot on Newbies would have opened their curtains on Sunday morning and went straight back to bed. There were 300 odd registered and only 230 showed up (i think).

All the top guys would not be put off by the weather so you probably did better that you thought.

Remembere that is the hardest Olympic course in Ireland bar none.

    Well Done!!

Damn, if it wasn't for those pesky midges, I think I could have been Top 10:)

Great day out and credit to Wicklow Tri Club for their organisation and welcome...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 400 ✭✭Spins

Tough Race! Don't know what my time was as I was shattered crossing the line and. as usual, forgot to look at the clock. Really well organised and marshalled. Well done Wicklow Tri. Did Hell of the West this year and actually found it harder because of the heat. However, given the exact same weather conditions, I reckon the Beast might just take it as the toughest. Great T-shirts too, well done again....

I was in on of the Kayaks and I had my Garmin 310 on. It clocked in at a little over 1600 meters which would seem right to me as I paddled from one side of the swim to the other so if I had of gone direct I'm sure it would have been 1500 meters.

It looked like a really tough swim though, well done to everyone who took part.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41 kruger73

I did the same time to the minute at HelloftheWest and Beast. Swim 3 min quicker in Kilkee, bike 5 min slower Kilkee and Run 2 min slower Kilkee. Transitions equalize the times.
I found Beast tougher and very much enjoyed it.

I agree. I did HOTW and BoTE too and I found the Beast a harder course. If you factor in the fact that HOTW is a 45k bike course and the times at HOTW were faster than the Beast.

I also echo the sentiments about the organiation/marshalls - this was a shining example of how to put on a triathlon

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,123 ✭✭✭GoHardOrGoHome

That was my second time Taming the Beast although at times I felt like I was being tamed brutally!

Overall I was about 10 minutes quicker than last year. 5 minutes quicker swim, same cycle time (within 30 seconds) and one minute quicker run. I was 3:19:32 last year and 3:09:01 this year. Transitions were better than last year because I had tri-shorts this year under the wetsuit instead of foostering around with a towel and cycling shorts and running shorts!

I thought I was pushing the cycle hard this year but obviously not! That said, I haven't had my arse on the saddle since the Kilcock tri in May. Pretty poor preparation overall so I'm lucky to have not done worse.

The Beast is the only olympic distance tri I've done so I'm still looking to get a sub 3 triathlon! Next year definitely.

Well done, you'd break 3hrs on Athy no problem - as the swim in mostly down stream, flat cycle and run.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 59 ✭✭clopd

Great race - I am delighted to have done it - only my second Olympic distance and great prep for Gaelforce next month, the hills should stand to me!!!

Climb from Laragh almost broke me
