'Dead' Foot

    Hi

    Just looking for advice from some of you. Over the last number of months i have been getting this 'dead' feeling in my right foot after approx 45mins - 1hr of running, a lot like pins and needles. I do a lot of trail/mountain workouts and i am currently preparing for Gael Force West in August.

    Could anyone shed any light on the problem. It may have something to do with tying my laces too tight and so cutting off blood supply to the foot?

    I would be grateful for any help on this as it can hamper the joys of the sport and participation in events.

    Sounds like a very likely explanation... Try experimenting with how you lace your runners and see if it helps.

    As usual, if it persists, seek professional help.

    I was experiencing something similar a while back. Dunno how much stretching or warm up you do but i think it might have been the root of my problem - i wasnt doing enough. It manifested itself into a calf strain and I ended up taking a break of 3-4 weeks and I havent experienced it since, calf now seems fine too.

    I am training for Gael force myself...not long now.

    You may have a point there Mush as i competed in a 10k last Saturday and done a good warm up and experienced no problems.

    I get something similar on my LSR's. It is not an injury because the foot is fine after running, but it is uncomfortable while running and I have to wiggle my toes while running to get some circulation into them.. I have loosened the laces and that helps a bit, but don't want them too loose or I will loose support from the trainers. I think I might get a pair of Compression socks as these seem to be designed for helping this type of problem??

    Thanks for the advice. Was reading on the 'blisters' topic that wearing technical/compression socks help the feet in all sorts of ways compared to the conventional cotton sock. I'm also wary of keeping my trainers on loose as i like some ankle support whilst running.

    I'm off to look for the compression socks and i'll let you know when i try them out.

    Please do, The technical anti Blister socks have definitely stopped my blisters, but I do get deadfoot if i go over an hour running. Will be interested to hear if the compression socks stop this.

    I remember a few years ago reading about something similar in the US edition of runners world. There's a nerve that runs down the top of your foot and can cause some foot pain or weirdness. They recommended reverse-lacing your shoe - i.e. starting from the top and finishing at the bottom so that the bow is at the end nearest your toes.

    I also read a suggestion that you use two laces per shoe so you could have them tighter round the ankle and looser over the instep, or vice versa. I was going to try it but my next pair of shoes fitted fine and there was no need.

    Ok, during my lunch hour i popped down to the running shop and spoke to one of the assistants in there. He explained to me that the problem may have something to do with the type of runner/trainer that i have on. He told me that whenever someone comes into their shop to buy a pair of trainers they carry out a test on a treadmill (Gait test?) in order to pick the right type of trainer to suit your foot. It may have been his way to sell me a pair of trainers, i'm not too sure but he did seem genuinely helpful.

    I asked about the compression sock but was put off by them as they were knee length and i want to keep at least some of my resectability on the roads. They were like a pair of tights but do help blood circulation in the legs and feet.

    However, i did buy 2 pairs of technical socks for which i shall try out at the w-end. I will also try lacing the shoes the opposite way. Anything is worth a try.
