So I finally am getting around to that point where I have to get a 'cellphone' in the states (eww). ****ing hate these providers. Its like Ireland. They all have a sick Cartel on it. These prices all seem gross to me.

The good news is I somehow managed to pay off the 150 euros to 02 to unlock my old phone (sack of *****) so I dont have to be locked into another mind-warping bi-annual contract. The bad news is, its a GSM phone, and only 2 US companies do 'em, furthering this disgusting trend of price fixing.

Most of these plans start at $40 and get more exorbitant as you go up the chain, some ending up as high as $110. And anything lower than 40 is just an Ackbar Trap to get you into being charged for insane overages. Like the email thing: if you check your email without a plan, its like 1c per KB which works out to $10.24 per MB: that, is gross.

Anyway I need some perspective. I remember the last time I used a phone it was with 02, and they were kinda stingy. But even they didnt charge you per minute to receive calls - which is apparently the norm over here. And im sure the inflation is worse for you guys. So im just looking to be smacked over the head here.

You can actually get charged for recieving calls?
That's just ****ed up. If I was ever presented with something like that I'd just avoid mobiles. You've been doing this so far I assume (since you say that you're just now starting to need one), is it really impossible for you to continue doing it?

I have a bill iPhone(Work), which costs me about €55 a month, and I have a PAYG iPhone(Play) which gets topped up by €20 for the free texts.
€75/month isn't too bad considering 90% of my Boards browsing is done through them.

80 euro. I've broken too many expensive ones. 3 in the wash, one in a pint, one from sweat in a nightclub, and one in a kebab in my pocket.

Don't ask about the last one. All that needs saying is it involved Fibber Magees on a Thursday.

I bought credit a few months ago. Probably still have most of it.

I'm on the talk 300 plan with meteor and I have an internet bundle so my basic is about 40 Euro, the bill is usually about 70, the highest I paid was 350!! Apparently a couple of texts and a 6 minute phone call from Egypt add up to 350 Euro.

I have 2 phones. A vodafone prepay which I mainly use for texting. I buy text bundles (€20 for 400 texts) around twice a year and I top up by €20 maybe every second month, then calls and texts are free for the next month.

My other phone is on an 02 landline plan. All calls to landlines and calls and texts to other O2 phones included in the flat-rate €25 a month bill. I make loads of calls on this so it's brilliant value. I don't have a landline in my house.

So about €40 a month I'd say. Much cheaper than buying credit.

20 a month does me and it's plenty.

Fcuking hate talking on the phone. If you want me, call to my house or fcuk off.

THIS exact thing happened me!! Was just outside Morocco (so not the very same) My talk 300 usually came in around 70/75 euro, after a call home. Yeah so the bill came in afterwards 330 euro...

Went roaming in California last year with Meteor, for a MONTH!! stupid idea, should have bought a PAYG sim.. hugh bill of 680euro

One has a dodgy loudspeaker(only plays about 50% volume), so it was replaced by Apple FOC. I still use the dodgy one as my PAYG as I always have it on silent anyways.

I was actually looking to swap it for some nokia but can't seem to find one I like.

You paid 150 euro to unlock your phone . I paid 5euro to some lad on a street corner with a laptop and it took him 2 mins to unlock it.

You could have gotten it unlocked for a tenner on Moore Street

The phone cost €50, and I spend bout a tenner a month on credit, sometimes less.

I don't do anything with my phone except text and talk, expensive phones (unless they're for some reason work related) are stupid imo

im on vodafone 200, which gives me 200 mins to landline or other network, 200 texts and free vodafone t vodafone calls and texts.

costs 49 a month, rarely go over that, and if i do its cause of texts to my sister in england.

i once got a bill of €670, yes, 670, after a weeks holiday to poland, because of nightly calls to and from himself.

cost more than the feckin holiday

I'm actually thinking of doing the same myself. I'll still have an iPhone but I just want a phone that can do all the stuff the iPhone can't.

I spend 20-30 euro a month on credit with 02.
Have the plan where I get free texts to any network, but my calls are about 50 cent a minute which is ridiculous! As soon as I get my last free 5eu off them this month I am changing to Meteor.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 423 ✭✭Pop's Diner

Cost's me fúck all. I've spent €30 on my phone in the last year. Never even use the thing unless it's an emergency and send all texts online for free.

The one good thing about meteor is that my boyfriend switched so we get free calls and texts to each other. When we first started going out his bill was 300-400 Euro for a couple of months because we would talk on the phone for about 3 hours a night! I was on Pay as you go and I spent 90 euro on credit one weekend.

monthly bills are generally 60 - 70 yoyos

In July I took a trip from Dublin Holyhead and was trying to ring the OH, was billed for 3 seconds bleep for over €4.20 through a Norwegian Maritime provider

that pee'd me off big time

Was in China for work last year or so and was charged over 17 yoyos to recieve a 12 min call from my OH.

    20e a month,before free text it was crazy like 80-100e a month!

Damn text topup was the undoing of me.

just went onto meteor bill 300 recently enough. First bill 100 as it was a double bill and second bill was 155 for alot of english calls. Expecting the next bill to be alot less as ive been keeping an eye on my calls.

You do dance a lot then!!!

At the minue there are two smallish blobs on my phone which means the lcd is fecked. My own fault though.

Twenty to thirty euro a month on credit, maybe a bit more. Vodafone's free text and calls when topping up by twenty euro is the business though. Most of my mates are vodafone!

    €20 a month.

My friend was spending ~€320 a month on her Pay as you go. She figured it was time to go bill. So we went into O2, Vodafone, Meteor stores one day to get few price plans. The convo would go something like this in each store:
Salesperson: 'So how much would you spend a month?'
    Friend:'around €320.'
    Salesperson 'ok €320 a month.'
Pause for a few seconds for it to actually sink it
Salesperson: '320 a month????!! Oh my god!!!'
I was in tears of laughter with the look on their faces!:D

You paid 150 euro to unlock your phone . I paid 5euro to some lad on a street corner with a laptop and it took him 2 mins to unlock it.
I had used up that much credit over 18 months. The first time I wanted it unlocked I was about 15e short and not very trusting of some dodgy geezer with a headshop down an alleyway.

I probably would just do Pay as You Go again but most topup options charge you an "activation fee" on any day you use one, ie. if you make a phone call, (or likely, receive a phonecall) they charge you $1-$3 depending on what carrier youre with for the use of the phone that calendar day. And the low tier plans are useless. For instance you get 200 anytime minutes on one, but no texts. In the fine print, they deduct texts from your anytime minutes credit or something inane like that.

I dare you. Look on any of these carriers and try to find a plan that makes sense (especially at the lower price points). Im stuck for T-mobile and Cingular/AT&T unless I want to lock myself into a new contract (and I dont) to get a CDMA capable phone.

€20 a month, gets me unlimited calls and texts to other o2 people. Almost everyone I know is on o2, and I dont ring landlines much.
