Hi I have upgraded my hard drive on my dell inspiron 6400,
I installed 'Windows 7' on the new drive.
I then went out & bought an enclosure for my spare drive.

Now the problem, I cannot access the external drive, it does not show up on my computer.

I checked device manager & its gives this error code
" This device cannot start. (Code 10)"

I backed up my hard drive before i swapped it & I thought that i could just format it when I had 7 up and running.
My original OS was windows xp

Coud please point me i the right direction, do I have to put it back in the laptop & format it?

It has windows xp as OS.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thankks

check the spare drive, is there a 'jumper' on it setting it to master, if there is you may need to set it to 'Cable select', 'secondary' or 'slave', this configuration is normally printed on the drive label.

    Hi,
Thank you for the reply, I am unaware of Jumper switches, I have taken the drive out & I cant see anything relating to what you have said.

My old drive is a western digital wd1200bevs, 2.5 sata.

I have googled for info but I am more confused than when I started.

I have just put the drive bac in & it is now recognised by the desktop.

I must not have secured it properly.

Thank you for your reply again,

Np. If it's a SATA drive it wont have Jumpers, they are on (older) IDE drives, so sorry for confusing you, but I suppose in a roundabout way it solved your issue;)

It certainly did, only problwm now is that it does not show on my laptop vista but my desktop vista has no problem. ?

On the desktop, right click the My Computer Icon and choose Manage, open Disk Management and see if the drive is listed here. Right click it and choose to change the drive letter.
Your old drive was allocated drive C: beforehand, now it cannot be C: so the PC needs to be told to allocate to a different drive letter.

I have changed the drive letter to (L) & slow formatted the drive to NTFS with allocation unit size set to default.

It is still not showing up on the laptop, not a clue what to do now...
