For off campus, I've heard rates in Shanowen [Square and Hall] are pretty good, but you'd want to talk to someone who's been there.

took a look at shanowen myself. it looks like they have a waiting list though so the fact all open spots are booked put me off it.

Shanowen Square is incredibly overpriced. You pay ~€600/month.

    For that you get:
A small room, your own bathroom, a shared livingroom/kitchen, and your bills paid. If you have a car you must pay extra to keep it there, if you want internet (and I use that loosely. 40KB/s is not internet in my mind) you must pay ~€150 for the year. Also they have the worst furniture, horrible hard wooden 'couch' and chairs.

Conversely I pay €375 a month plus bills to live in a 2 bathroom, 4 bedroom house, a couple minutes walk from DCU.

With falling rent prices Shanowen Square is even worse value than it used to be.

Shanowen Hall is a bit of a kip, with pretty bad security. I never lived there, but went there the odd time. They do have proper couches though.

Avoiding gateway like the plague. People had trouble getting their deposits back this year because the company running Gateway went out of business or something.

Do not move into Gateway or Hazelwood at any cost! Especially especially gateway. I have stayed at both and they are horrible, the management are TERRIBLE to deal with - very unhelpful. They try to steal your money left right and centre. In both places I have had incredible difficulty trying to get my deposit returned. And Gateway is incredibly dangerous - people apts get broken into regularly, windows smashed the lot.

A better idea would be to rent a house with some friends in the area. Or move to town and take the bus to college
