Is this a sign of my Graphics card failing

    Hi,

I think my memory card is failing, When I start up my computer all I'm greeted by is a black screen. The computer boots as normal but the screen just stays black. Now the only way I can get the screen to show is to put the computer to sleep via the keyboard and the awaken the same way and hope the screen will show. Sometimes it does some times it doesn't. It could take 10-20 minutes to get the screen to show. But once it shows its fine and no problems will display.

I checked all drivers and updates and every thing is fine. And I think the only thing that could be at fault is the graphics card. I checked the ram and all's fine.

I just want to confirm its the graphics card before I buy a new one.

Computer is a Dell Dimension 9200

    Thanks

Is your graphics card part of the motherboard, or seperate in a PCI/AGP slot? If it's seperate, try removing it and reseating it; might be a dodgy connection.

Have you ruled out a problem with your monitor? What kind of cables are you using to connect to your monitor (VGA/DVI/HDMI?) Problem with the cable/connections maybe?

If you have a another monitor port on the motherboard (assuming your graphics card is seperate), you could try connecting with this until you find out where the problem is..

Thanks, Its a seperate graphics card and I'll try taking it out and putting it in, but as the problem is slowly getting worse I think it could be the card failing. The monitor is connected by the VGA but I'm sure the monitor is working fine no flickers, lines anything to suggest it could be it.

Test the monitor on another machine.

I've tested the monitor with a Laptop and a netbook both work fine and when I pull out the cables at the back the Dell test screen appears immediately. I've also switched from DVI to VGA.

I took out the graphics card and gave it a good vacuum and put back in everything seemed OK, but still the same problem, took me about 20 minutes of sleeping the PC and re awaking it before the graphics showed up.

Did you try with the card out, and using the VGA port on the motherboard? Might eliminate motherboard/software issues.

Another thing would be to try the card in another PC; might'nt be possible for you though.

Is it possible refresh rates or screen resolution may be causing the problem? I dunno.

After that, might be worth uninstalling graphics card drivers/software, and reinstalling, maybe older, more stable versions?

Just throwing ideas at you to try. Good luck with it.
