I know the first half hour is free. anyone know what the story is registering for the scheme?

Good to see some enthusiasm. Go you!

AFAIK it will be a tenner a year to be registered on the scheme. Current go live date is 13th September 2009.

What's the story with helmets? Are they going to insist on you having a helmet before releasing the bike to you? (I'm just wondering, I always wear my helmet)

It's not legally compulsory to wear a helmet, so i don't see why this would be an issue. If you ALWAYS wear your helmet, then just bring it with ye.

I am wondering if there'll be lights and bells on the bikes (As this is legally required)? And if locks are provided, or if there is any other system to allow them be left anywhere other than the "stations" for short period of time (outside a shop or whatever).

I think that is done in the form of a pre-authorisation on your credit card, e.g. they get authorisation when you take the bike but only actually take the money if you don't return it.

    And bells are attached too.

Yes, the lock is for this -- it's extra to the locking device which is used at stations.
