What are peoples experiences of these guys. I was thinking of getting far more involved with them this year, because the trad scene in college is a real let down and i'm determined to Irish up this college before i leave.

I was at the session they had last year in mother reilly's in rathmines and it was absolutely miserable. I've been down in Miltown Malbay at the Willie Clancy week and its really lit a fire under me for doing this kind of stuff. How is the regular session in Pearse street?

They've been poor for the last two years or so... it takes someone to really grab the reigns with it - It has been great in the past. I know we, in the Cumann Gaelach, were let down by them a few times.

Thats great, i've only been here for 2 years. Did I miss the good days i wonder? How do were ye let down jp? I think it could be great. I really like the idea of getting everyone in college with half a tune in them together. Even the thought of it excites me. I'm beginning to realise that music is the best thing mankind has ever invented.

    Edit: I play whistle Ron

As James said above, the society has been great in the past. It really depends on the committee year on year.

The weekly sessions (depending on turnout) can be excellent, though that said I can't remember the last time I went along, it's been that long.

Just get involved. Pop along to the stand during Freshers' week. Help out, pull in more people. I'll only be as active as you make it.

What instrument do you play out of interest?

I can't remember if it was last year, or the year before (or both years)... but we had arranged an event or two with TradSoc and no musicians turned up.

If I remember correctly, it wasn't for a Céilí or anything major, was it not just a drinks reception? Music's fairly optional for that kind of thing.

My memory's shot... was it something like Lá Gaelach sa Phabh? It happened more than once though.

And you're asking me? I haven't had to remember things in an official capacity in nearly two years.

Looks like theres not a lot of interest in the Tradsoc. They seem to have built up a bad reputation with some people. I was talking to a fella in 1st year who really wasn't a fan of them at all. He wouldn't tell me why though. Its a pity really because they could really be great. There are some fantastic young musicians out there.

I did fiddle lessons with them most of the year and found people pretty friendly, so dunno where this negativity is coming from... Sort of difficult to join in on the sessions if you don't already know the tunes though, I found.

I don't actually play any instruments, although I do have my grandad's old box which I never learned to play, but I would love to see the tradsoc doing well. One of my mates has a family who are big into their Irish music and he's great when a session is going. I was hoping to tag along with him if he got into the tradsoc, but he transferred to RCSI so there's no sessions for me!
