I don't think there are recruiting agencies in the same way because the wages aren't as good. If you work in Eastern Europe you will get a good wage for the area, but it won't be anywhere as good as what you would get in Asia. Still, I just wasn't really interested in going to Asia.

I worked here for a year. Was a fantastic year!

Did you learn Russian, cailinoBAC, or did you know it already? Would the language be necessary for spending a year in Minsk?

I had done a very basic Russian course before but arrived more or less with nothing. They provided one to one classes, it was up to me whether I took it seriously or not. I learnt enough to get by, but wouldn't be having any deep philosophical discussions! On the other hand one American guy ended up marrying a local girl. His Russian is pretty fluent now! Then the guy from England spoke none when he arrived and didn't exactly speak much when he left, but could still make himself understood. I made a lot of friends among the teachers in the school, my students and also students at the linguistic university. I've been back loads of times to visit. I originally wanted to go somewhere in Spain or Italy but couldn't find a job that would pay me enough to get by. In the end I'm glad I ended up where I did because it was a bit out of the ordinary and I got to know so many locals, rather than just hanging around with other ex pats.
