Does alcohol give you a false appetite?

Some of my mates can go out after having a sandwich all day and not feel hungy at the end of the night, my partner included.

Where as i could go for a 3 course meal before i go out and at the end of the night id be starving

So Does alcohol give you a false appetite? Or are you the kinda person who doesnt want food after a night out?

I’m the complete opposite if I haven’t eaten I can go into a pub and start drinking and forget about being hungry. Having said that if I then smell any food I remember pretty fast alright.

    It depends..usually I wouldn't be a bit hungry.
And the next morning I usually wouldn't be hungry.
But,if a mate suggests geting food,I usually pop up and am instantly starving lol :p

Some alcohols will contain sugars, which could lead to insulin spikes and leave you craving.

The 4.3% heineken here is 3.1% sugar (coke is around 10.5%). I could drink one of those 5L kegs in a night no problem, that is 155g sugar, which is a fair few bars of chocolate worth of sugar.

It will also get stomach acid going and that might give your body a signal to eat or something. I know I conciously eat even if I am not hungry after drinking so my stomach will be OK in the morning.

    Breakfast  :D

Come on, who hasn't reheated a half eaten burger or pizza from the night before? Don't lie, I know you have!!

I think that you only have to look in any chippy at the end of the night and see that alcohol does make you hungry. Personally i love a pizza after a night out but i hate the massive queues so i just get it delivered and i avoid all the queuing.

Anti chris-t. :) Love that user name.

I prefer not to eat after drinking. Before yes but not after. I like to wait for a proper cafe breakfast the following morning.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

I can eat a full dinner before heading out and still get a snack box at the end of the night. More often than not I only know I've eaten it from the remains the next morning!

I find if I have a good breakfast I could drink all day, but if I take a break for food after a few pints it takes me a good 2 hours to be able to drink again... Try not to eat after drinking because I always eat too much

No not at all theres nothing like a feed of drink to work up an appetite for food the next day. What do you generally drink, if they're very sugary drinks then that may explain lack of appetite as you might be coming off a sugar high.

i usually drink Pints of Heninken and then a few Vodkas and Club Lemon,i do nearly always be hungover after drinking and im never fit to eat.

Alcohol causes a drop in blood sugar levels leading to hunger.

Although if you eat you're clearly a pussy, the way to get rid of the hunger is to continue drinking until you're completely off your face and don't notice the hunger anymore.

I have two types of hangovers. One is where I have absolutely no appetite for food, I just live off water and juice for the day.

The other ones (the more usual ones :o) are the ones where once I start eating, nothing can stop me!

    I'm a bit weird I think..

I actually don't really get hungry at all...

It's normal enough for me to go a few days without food just because I've been busy and forgotten to eat. :o

It's a bit of a pain in the ass tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,919 ✭✭✭Schism

I think I've got an accelerated version of this, I get the munchies after a pint or a couple of bottles. I find though it goes away if I ignore it and keep drinking. :D

I'm like your mates. I cant eat anything after even one drink. Totally kills my appetite.
