Is this for gaming? Because I can't think of a single game that needs more then 3mbs.

Your ping will determine how good your gaming experience is. Go here (http://www.speedtest.net/) and test your connection. You want your ping to be as low as possible. Under 50 is good, much over 100 and you will have laggy matches.

Think of upload/dload speed like the top speed in a car, and the ping like the acceleration. Then imagine your gaming experience as a 100m race where the top speed doesn't count for much as the race is over before it can be reached.

My sister has a Smart telecom line in here flat in Cork, says its about 9Mbps and unlimited download limit, probably costs an arm, leg and several teeth per month though.

It's not unlimited, Smart lied and they enforce a semi-secret cap in violation of their terms and conditions.

depending on your connecton, you might be able to get interleaving on the line turned off. This will improve pings.
I'm with Smart. I requested interleaving turned off on a sunday evening. i got a response within an hour and it had been turned off by the next morning.
If you are far from the exchange, you might need interleaving left on though. I had no negative effects from having it turned off, but I'm right next to the exchange.

All ISP's would do that, it's in the T&C's and is part of the fair usage policy.

I have Magnet broadband at home and it is great for Gaming and downloading.

I was recently upgraded to 24Meg down for the same price I was paying for 7Meg.

Pings are solid at between 30 - 60ms. I have also heard that they are interested in improving their services for gamers.

Check out their forum here on boards

    Best o luck.

Ping time is a more important factor than download speed, also whats your upload because even a 1Mbit download speed is good enough for gaming

I have done a speed test and this is the result :
    • download 0.87 mb/s
    • upload 0.10 mb/s
    • ping 89 ms
are these results good or bad ?

Live on campus in a university :P
[supposedly] 100Mbps connection, provided by HEAnet could download a split file of about 800Mb in around 3 minutes if contention was low.

God I can't wait to get off dial up..

we look at a rolling 30 day window of your upstream + downstream traffic. Currently if this measure exceeds 170GB

Well considering Eircoms 50GB limit its not so bad. Especially because eircom said my 100gb downloaded this month would be about 800 euro in fees (if they charged for it)

As for companys using the word "unlimited" but capping it; isnt that false advertising? Sure it might be in the T&C but surely they shouldnt be allowed to use the word "unlimited" since it means "no limit", not "no limit up to a certain amount"

The T&C's for Smart explicitly state that there was no set limit. But we covered it already here
