    Hello all!!
Basically I need a good oul laugh. Dara O Brian, David O Doherty, Tommy Tiernan, Bill Bailey, Demetri Martin and Mitch Hedburg would be the dudes that get me super smiling... Dara, David, Mitch and Bill especially...

I am here to ask if someone with a broader knowledge comedians could recommend me some new names? There's only so many vids of each of these on YouTube and I need my stand up fix! Preferably on the web...videos etc!

Anyone found any gems in the International lately or anything either?

    G-roovy <3

I suggest starting going to comedy clubs to get some real gems, there is a lot of talent out there that you won't see on DVD or tv for various reasons (still climbing the ranks, backstage politics, "clean" clubs won't book them, etc).

Personally on the Irish club scene I would recommend Garoid Farrelly, James Marsh, Damon Blake, Dan O Shae, Damon Blake, Barry Mac, George Fox, Jim Elliot. All great prospects that are looking good but aren't getting the break they deserve to really shine (aside from Garoid, he's pissing through the ranks, and deservedly so). Some of them actually did the boards comedy gig about a year ago, and went down a fecking storm.

Of the more estalished guys on the Irish circuit I would recommend Robbie Bonham, Colum McDonnell, Jarleth Regan and John Lynn, all of whom are very close to breaking through the glass ceiling in the very near future.

There is an entire generation of new Irish comedians out there who are showing real potential but not getting the chance they deserve to show what they can do, while others get the nod cos they know the right people and kiss the right arses. The comedy scene in this country is so political most people have no idea, it's ridiculous.

I'm just gonna mention Jarleth Regan here. He played tonight and did possibly the best closing I have ever seen in stand up, next to Bill Hicks. He was awesome. Best of luck to him in Edinburgh.

Jarleth is fantastic, the most charming man in Irish comedy without a doubt

i totally agree with orestes, if you need a proper comedy fix then there is no better place than the clubs around ireland! there is comedy on every night of the week in Dublin, and more than one club on most days.

if you still want some youtube comedians then i would reccommend steve hughes, glenn wool, rich hall, and michael mcintyre! Theres plenty more but theres no point in bombarding you with names, your best bet is to get out and experience live stand up comedy at it's best!

Thanks for the shoutout there, Orestes! :)

That's why you'll note any really good AND well known Irish comedians, the Dylan Morans, the Dara O'Briains, the Byrnes, etc have all made it abroad , usually the UK, and rising to Irish prominence from that arena. The Dave Allen method, I call it...lol. It would seem to be the done thing, to make it elsewhere, alas there are comedians like myself who don't want to live abroad, so just keep plugging away here, deperately hoping not to die in obscurity. Much of the comedy business here seems to be based on favours, rather than common sense. I only play the sensible clubs, meself... :)

    Read Puckoon by Spike Milligan

Listen to Hancock on BBC IPlayer (different show every week)

    The Marx brothers

    etc

    The classics as it were

good think about brushing up on the real good stuff(no matter when it was made) is you tend to see thru the bluffers at comedy clubs straight away

Bad thing is, there are a lot of bluffers (see orestes politics post above )
and you may occasionally find yourself being the only person at a venue not laughing

is there nowhere for the man with a 95 IQ?

For what it's worth, the two comedians I've most enjoyed seeing recently have been Gary Lynch and Kevin McGahern. Gary does darker material that have some of the best jokes I've heard in ages, Kevin does more conceptual material that is quite funny and idiosyncratic.
The comedy scene in this country is so political most people have no idea, it's ridiculous.

Well, people don't really care if the bakers making the bread don't like each other. I think people focus on standup thinking that other success comes from it, when I think it's the other way round, it's becoming successful in other facets of comedy (writing, tv, viral videos) that gives you the impetus to become known to people.

In your own career (comedy or otherwise) whoever you perceive as having power over what you can achieve only does so because you let them. Generally I find I would not want the lives these people lead, as they seem to be filled with compromise and desperation. The people that orestes (neeeerd) listed are creative people with interesting things to say (I would include him in that list) but who are not burdened with a need for attention (except for Gearoid (just joshing!(i don't usually say joshing, fyi))), as such I'm sure many of them will find alternatives outside such politics, although there are politics in everything. Standup is an expression and a stepping stone but there's plenty more options in the world.

Anyway, I bought Dana Gould's Funhouse album the other day, it's got some great bits if you like alternative comedy, worth a listen. He released recordings of all his sets a few years ago that I have in a zip folder somewhere, going to get the rest of his albums off of iTunes shortly.

Aw wow! Thanks for all the replies this is great!

PapaSmut - as for comedy clubs, unfortunately I wouldn't get to any too often. Have been to the international before on a Wednesday night or something and had a great night, was proper proper laughing - unfortunately can't remember the names of who was on that night though, fairly useless at that kinda thing. Any where in particular you'd recommend? I don't know of to many places other than the international and the laughing lounge - i think theres stand up on in the ha'penny inn? The cheaper the better (student ;)). I would be greatful of any tips! thanks :D

CQD - Simon Amstell actually makes me hurt laughing he's so cute and hilarious and just a downright cheeky brat - is there stand up stuff planned for him or are we just wishful thinking?? I've seen all of the Never Mind the Buzzcocks..is he in anything else worth watching for a chortle other than PopWorld or whatever it was called? He's feckin gas..

Orestes - Thank you so much for all the names, I definetly recognise a few of them - am gonna go onto myspace now and add them all to get a gander at any up and coming gig dates - this is looking quite promising for improving my stand-up-induced-laughter-in-3d so thank you very much! oh and, A Perfect Circle Mer De Noms is one of my fave albums ever ;) Kudos

Grames Bond - Thanks again for some names - saw a post you left in another thread with a video by some one liner dead pan guy - was a bit of alright :D Will be sure to add these names to the myspace updates thing too

All in all thanks everyone that's a sh1t lot of ammo for my ....comedy.........gun :(

    :P
