So I was talking to my mother today about getting a new laptop and I said to her it'd be cheaper to get it from the UK off ebay and immediately she went in a big rant about how the laptop could bring swine flu into the house blah blah blah............... :) then i told her that we only got a letter from an english relative today anyway so what's the difference and she just walked away

Is my mom just nuts or is this the general public feeling at the moment =p

    Swine flu

Hundreds, nay thousands of people did from influenza every year. Why did I hear no outcry in 2007 or 2008?
And what happened to bird flu, the media hyped and it disappeared without a trace.

I was a volunteer in the 2003 Special Olympics.
Oh the warnings and talks we got about Hong Kong athletes and the Sars virus.
    Meh, nothing happened.
What's with the constant scare stories, does it sell advertising and newspapers?

In 2010, thousands more will due from influenza.
And while it's sad we'll hear nothing more about it....

It's a good way to seek out the gullible people in society. If you get swine flu, so what, you have the same chances of all of us (99.99% chance of living) and have a story to bring up in the pubs ("I got swine flu"). What're we meant to do, all buy giant inflatable bubbles?

Or it could be the fact that we were actually so vigilant about the things that their spread was severely prevented.

    Complacency is a dangerous thing.

Exactly tbh I'd be more afraid of sleeping with some floozy than the ol' swine flu. My mother and father were saying similar things re: my trip to australia and said "it now so serious that the Church are going banning the holy water fonts, so that is serious" :pac:

Yeah this whole thing about swine flu is a load of bull. IMO its just the flu becoming more resistant to the antibiotics we use at the moment to combat the flu. People need to get a grip! Its only the flu with an animals name tacked in front of it!

The World Health Organisation doesn't label things as a pandemic for a laugh. In fact they haven't done it since the 60s.

The media is of course fudging everything to sell papers... even the naming in the media of the H1N1 virus as Swine flu is inaccurate.

Antibiotics dont work against flu - cause its a virus!
    (Antibiotics only treat bacterial infections).

Ok - I'll get off my soap box now.

Work is under way on a vaccine, but it may be the end of the year before we see it.

But it's thanks to recent experiences with SARS and Avian Flu that systems are in place that we're able to move so fast on these things now.

Pandemics generally come in waves too... at the moment the symptoms are mild but the next wave could be more severe.

No one really knows how many swine flu cases are out there, so it's hard to tell what percentage of people die, tbh.

Also, you need to compare how many people get swine flu with how many get malaria in Ireland if you want an idea of how it will kick in this winter.

If 1 million people get it, which isn't impossible......1,000 will likely die, and about 5,000 will end up on life support in ICU in Ireland. We'll struggle to cope with that (albeit a worst case scenario).Even if half a million get it, the figures are still scary.

Anyone who thinks SARS was nothing doesn't know A) what they're talking about and B) How it was controlled.

Don't lose sleep over it. But be aware that people have died, pregnant women have lost babies, and kids are on life support because of this virus.

We're long overdue a major dose of pestilence, that's why the WHO is looking to every new disease as the "next big thing".

It's only a matter of time - then house prices wil go down a lot!
