The first thing you need is wind and plenty of it. I was inquiring about them at the ploughing last year, the salesman wasn't a bullsh1tter. He said if your site is too low down and sheltered forget about it. For a turbine to run a farm and home you would want to spend €18,000. It will take 10 years before you see any return and after that time the turbine will require more maintenance. I don’t know how long it takes to get a return now that you can feed the surplus back to the national grid.

check out www.windturbines.ie they do a 1kw for a house, 3kw and 5kw for farms located in cork. You can have a look at esb website as well for selling the surplus back

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

5kw is not that big. It depends on how much electricity you use. Am looking at a 15kw at the moment, for ourselves, although we would have a large electricity bill. Depends on your energy use.
Biggest factor, as said above, is the site. If you don't have the right site, wouldn't even consider it.

I've been interested in wind turbines on a small scale, and decided its not worth the effort.

However if you have access to a head of water a water turbine is a much better bet, they produce 230 vac, and don't require batteries invertors etc.

This site has some water turbines upto 20 kW, and explanations of the different kinds
