Your college should have a style guide that they want you to use. Which college are you in?

I went to DIT and we used the Harvard Referencing System, so on that basis the format for referencing a newspaper article would be:
Author, Initials (Year of Publication) Name of Article. Name of Newspaper in Italics, Date, Start of article page number

    For example:-
Myers, K (2000) The Youth of Today. The Irish Times, 11th March, p.14

When referencing books, do you typically use a numbering system or the author(s) surname followed by a year in-text? That would give some indication at least of the referencing system.

Yeah I have to use the harvard referencing system, I was mainly just wondering are newspapers a valid source. But thanks a million for clearing up that grey area for me...:):):):)

It would have been better if I read your post fully alright! As long as its a reputable paper (Irish Times, Irish Independent, Sunday Times, Sunday Business Post, probably the Examiner too) you should be alright. My lecturers preferred references to the paper copy rather than the online copy which was a bit of a pain.

Use a reference manager to handle all your cited articles.

Preferably use a Bibtex manager such as Jabref with some sort of Latex distro.
Lyx is a nice package for easily putting together a thesis.

(These are all free by the way)

If you're citing academic papers then you can download the citation directly from the publishers webpage and load it into your reference manager.

If not you just have to fill in a few required fields and Jabref will construct the Bibliography for you from the citations you've added in the text.

Steer clear of Word, its a load of ****e.
