Okay, so I'm a newbie runner training for my first marathon. I hate gels but I need to eat them on my long runs as I can't stomach much else. I'm trying to find out what races have what gels so I can get used to the different options before race day. I only doing the Dublin Marathon at the moment but I wanted to make this thread a but more useful.

So, What can we expect at food stops ?

Most marathons will only have water, energy drink and energy gels(if you're lucky). You'll often have randomers handing out bits of fruit, jellies and lollipops though.

For the DCM according to this, there will be energise sport drinks at miles 9,12,15 and 18 while there will be High 5 Gels at miles 15 and 18.

Did they have these last year, did they run out of gels or were the stations well stocked?

They are very well stocked with gels. They'd happily shove 5 of them into your hand.

Mile 9 is a rotten place to hand out energise though, they hand that out just before the hill on St. Laurences Road which was a disaster for me last year, although it wasn't a problem the year before, but my stomach was in bits climbing that hill after just a couple of sips of energy drink.

"Food" and "stop". Spot the cyclist! :)

Many people also position friends/relatives at agreed points around the course to give them gels/drinks/whatever.

Also worth noting that the Energise drinks provided in the race are provided in cups (a skill in itself to drink from a plastic cup whilst running), but water provided in bottles. However, on typing that I think they may have handed out Energise bottles at one water station.

Oh, what's the correct parlance? Water station. Personally I'd enjoy a compulsory cake stop at 13 miles perhaps with coffee

Dean Karnazes has been known to have a slice of pizza during a marathon!
