Is it illegal to drive on a motorway with something protruding from one's boot? A ladder or what have you - secured obviously.

It could quiet easily be classed as dangerous driving or reckless driving.

More a Motor Forum question I would have thought, but you must secure the load and a red flag, at night a red light and reflector, must be attached to the extremity. Rearward vision must be maintained, either interior or exterior mirrors must be usable. There is a length limit of something like 2m but up to that you're good to go.
