About to record an EP and looking to get it mastered after its recorded and mixed.
Came accross this service online http://www.tunecore.com/store/product/62
Mastered by Universal Mastering Studios with top engineers for $50 per song is this too good to be true? The answers to the FAQ's seem convincing.
Anyone have any experience of this service? Would it be better to just get it done locally?
    Peace!

Probably gonna go with this service unless someone can give us a really good reason not to between now and then. I'm curious myself and its only gonna cost $200 for a 4 track EP which is about €140. I doubt any mastering studios in Ireland work that cheap.

Make sure you proof it before paying on as many systems as you can

Fot roughly the same price you could sit in a session with a pro like Fergul Davis and play a part in the process rather than just shooting and hoping for the best.

Thanks Dav I suppose that could be worth looking into I couldn't find a website only a MySpace for suite studios but no prices listed (I hate that).
In fact I couldn't find prices online for any Irish mastering studio.

Talk to Fergal in Suite and Richard in WAV in Limerick if you'd like to have input in how your work is presented.

Both will give you feedback on the quality of your mix.

That probably has a greater impact on the final result than whatever Mastering might do.

The more Masterable you present it to them, the better the final result .

Thanks Paul and Dav useful contacts which I will look into I always prefer to "shop" local if the price is competitive.
Just getting back to my original post has anyone any experience of the Universal Mastering Studios online service or anything similar?

Interestingly Universal Music (IRL) does not use Universal Mastering Studios , They have been using us www.masterlabs.net for the last 10+ years. If you use a local studio , you will get a much more personalized service , and only pay when you are 100% happy with the sound. FYI,we can come in very close to this price

Thanks StudioJunkie! and the rest of you who have mailed me...
In response to a question on this thread the reason why we don't print prices on our url's is that Major Labels pay a different price to independent artists to Independent labels. It is a three tier price structure most of us don't wish to publish..
In response to another comment "Both will give you feedback on the quality of your mix" Masterlabs has always and will always give you feedback on your mix. We do not master anything that is sub-standard and will give you advise on what to change if the mix is poor.(fortunately this is a rare issue with us, as you all know how to pump it out!) respect...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xW0nNMQcxE4

    Hey,
thought i'd just chime in with my experiences... I've used both the online FTP services & a good few of the Irish mastering house's and to be honest I would go with a sit in session any day of the week , as has been explained your can get a sit in session with a good ME in Ireland for quite cheap if you are independent , just call up and ask to see what they can do ... from my experience most are flexible and can work to your budget within reason.... my main negatives against the online guys i used was the communication issue, if things go wrong and they do it can be a commutation black hole trying to explain what you'd like & then they can also take some time in getting back to you which can be very stress full... In Ireland I've used Fergal who has been mentioned before and he was great ...but I would highly recommend getting in contact with Aidan @ masterlabs, he's a gent and the masters he done for the last project I was involved with blew me away, I could tell time had gone into them & he really listened to the content and didn't just follow a formula.. anyway hope that helps
