    Not a surprise at all

No surprise he's been done for doping but slightly shocked that it's CERA and not some form of blood doping.

CERA is a form of blood doping, it boosts the number of red blood cells in your bloodstream. In its legitimate use it is used to treat anemia.

Rather incredible people are still using EPO and their off-shoots.

Wasn't the GIRO fun though

Does this put even more questions marks over Menchov(and Rabobank), or is he just like LA and he can beat the best of the Dopers with nothing but 'Hard work and commitment'

    Indeed.
Menchov beats Di Luca in Giro whilst Di Luca is souped up - and after doping allegations is no no-where to be seen in Le Tour....mmmmm...

Maybe I didn't phrase that one clearly, I understand what CERA is and how it works what I mean is that I presumed with the test that exists for it he would be more likely to be using transfusions and caught via blood passport irregularities.

    Least surprising positive test.... ever.

I too am surprised people are still using CERA. And it's a bit worrying. They can't all be that stupid. So there must be something going on. Remember Ricco said he should have been positive in every test? I'm wondering if riders have realised that only a small percentage of tests will go positive and that it might be worth the risk?

If it only takes a couple of days to go out of the system, but effects persist for weeks, then it's hardly surprising that people are still taking it.

You'd need to be tested almost daily to be sure of being caught.

The HCT/blood passports only provide circumstantial evidence, of which there is now no doubt a great deal.

    That's my understanding anyway.

Presumably if your team is testing your blood more often that the UCI, you know when your bloods will look dodgy and can then stay clean for a while.

Remember, Ricco didn't seem to be a particurly intelligent human being. It isn't as simple as 'you dope, they test you and you automatically test positive', they knew he was doping from the Giro and eventually got the positive.

I dunno I would have been less surprised if Menchov tested positive, however like you I do wonder about his intelligence if he was using Cera. Again this raises the spectre of well of he's doping and getting beat - what are the rest
    of them on then ?

I look at Contador and i am having serious doubts about him like, doesn't seem to puff or be under pressure at all, today you could see guys riding at
thier own tempo till they got over the climbs yet he had more gas left, Andy Schlek was visibly grimacing after Kloden was dropped, I thought they should have attacked there and then but Contador looked under no pressure.

I'm not at all convinced by these blood passports as they should be showing up variations in people's hamecroit levels during and out of
competition yet people are still getting caught for using products. Which toe signals that either they are still micro dosing themselves in line with the rising and falling levels or the blood passports aren't worth a ****.

Between not knowing that they are timing chips on the stays and now this blorg.....

its a form of doping that affects blood, not blood doping...........

    :)

Ahh Wiggo, always telling it like it is..
Di Luca, what a W***er! unbelievable

Least surprising positive test going. As said above, I'm more surprised that they're still using/getting caught with CERA. Most intriguing.

    WADA disagrees... :)

    What is blood doping?
Blood doping is the misuse of certain techniques and/or substances to increase one’s red blood cell mass, which allows the body to transport more oxygen to muscles and therefore increase stamina and performance.

What are the most widely known types of blood doping?
There are three widely known substances or methods used for blood doping: erythropoietin (EPO), synthetic oxygen carriers, and blood transfusions.

Each is prohibited under the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) List of Prohibited Substances and Methods.

Im not a scientist or a drug tester, but maybe im a nostradamus....

ok heres my pitch... within about a year we are going to hear that cocaine is being used as a masking agent for some of the unknown doping products that exist right now, whether they be blood boosters or of the growth hormone variants.

the penalty for the use of cocaine isnt as severe as that of peformance enhancing drugs so its probably considered the healthier risk towards public profile.

Hair strands are often used as primary tests for coke and to date the use of it, which might indicate why so many have a shaved head. I know this might sound like a whacky conspricacy (near the anniversary of the faked moon landing) but its a hunch i have.

in recent years washing powder is the back pocket of a jersey was used to negate the use of drugs in urine tests, until it was discovered that some tests showed zero readings for naturally produced by products of excretion

i know this is open to criticism now but i would just suggest that this be remembered when its announced sometime in the Future.

the cheats are always one step ahead, hopefully in the future the tests do catch up.

I thought it was a bit disingenuous of him to say it was "unbelievable". Who really believed that DDL was clean? Really? Either naivety, ignorance or head in the sand

FFS that is beyond ridiculous. Do you have something in for Boonen? I'd like your speculation BTW of how occasional cocaine use out of competition could potentially mask doping. What is the proposed mechanism you have there?

    Chewbacca prosecution

Why would a Wookiee, an eight-foot tall Wookiee, want to live on Endor, with a bunch of two-foot tall Ewoks? That does not make sense!

no worries blorg, i know it might seem a bit way out there, ive nothing against Boonen, to be honest i admire his style or racing the classics alot and am dissappointed for him.
Cocaines use is not only in cycling, theres been many positive tests for it across track and field and soccer too.

I appreciated your theory, in that you never know. But the amount of cacaine that is found in testing athletes from various sports maybe just representative of how much coke is in an segment of society (eg 20-30 year olds in the western world).

Yes thats true ROK ON i hadnt considered that when writing.

Still you would imagine that those who know they are likely to be tested for anti doping for sport would have more restraint if it were purely for recreation.

Fun fact: same thing goes for asparagus, which is a potential masking agent for urine tests.

    Coincidence?

I'm sure we'll see the tosser back in the Giro in 2012 anyway.

Seems some dopers will always get a team willing to sign them up, especially Italians !!
