I'm intrigued by SortMyBooks.ie because it looks simple to use. I'm sure it's not but it appears simple enough.

Is it as easy as it looks ? Is it a solid platform ? Pros and Cons ?

Will this software eliminate the need for an accountant or is it a good tool to have alongside an accountant ?

Sage (sage.ie) have TAS Books for free at the moment (no catches). It is pretty easy to use. Depending on the your business and accountancy knowledge you may or may not need an accountant. Maybe get an accountant to help you get set up and check it for the first few months and after that you should be fine

There are lots of options out there for small businesses.

As at the end of the day all accounting entries are entered the same way you should select a package which is right for your business.

    Consider.

    Easy of use?
    Reports suitable for your business?
    Back up support 27/7?
    Cost of Upgrades?
    Cost of Training?

    Packages are as above.

    Sage Line 50 or 100
    TAS
    ABM
    Quickbooks
    Redbook

Ensure that you receive some basic training on how to operate the entry of an accounting system and then your up and running.

One thing I would say entrepreneur is dont chuck your accountant in the skip just yet. It doesn't matter how much you pay €0 - €2,000 it is worth sh!te if it is not installed correctly and set up to maximise the packages potential. I'm an accountant with 10 years experience and one of the big reasons an audit might run over on time and end up having a greater cost is because the client has not set up the software package correctly and as a result the information spewed out is absolute tripe therefore we have to rectify this before providing financial accounts.

One thing we have done in the past for a few clients is set-up a clients software package and provide training (please dont get me wrong I am not advertising my services I am just trying to give you some advice) but the client afterwards would confess that this excercise was absolute value for money.

included in the packages i have installed is TAS books basic (the free one they also offer free payroll software if you have less than 5 employees) anyway this packaage is does the trick if you run a services business.

    best of luck

There is also a Sage Instant entry level package for small businesses. This costs around €170 and they have a good back up / support team for it. They also have training courses on it too if interested but I think it might be a bit early to be thinking of dispensing with the accountant especially with the set up, basic training and tax computations later on.
