I have an old compaq presario 2100 laptop with 1.6ghz celeron chip. Could i put a better chip in it to speed it up, as its very slow with all security progs it needs on the lan. Also the battery won't hold recharge, where would i get a second hand battery

It can be possibly be upgraded, but you would need to know the socket type, and also the processors that were supported by your laptops BIOS. Also, you'd be buying an old (probably second hand) processor, so you're not going to find many around....and even then, the max supported CPU may not even be much better than the current one. Its all fairly hit and miss and to be honest I would not bother.

It would be better just to clean up the laptop. Maybe give it a clean install, make sure there's no malware or bloatware, and be very choosy in what programs you install (put on a 'lightweight' anti-virus for example). Upgrade the ram if necessary.

You would get a battery on ebay probably. Make sure you know the model number and specifications so you can double check you are getting the right one.

Fitting more RAM and a faster disk will yield better performance boosts than a larger processor.
