Is it legal to drive a car wearing headphones?

It's certainly not advisable and I doubt if it's legal!

    No, afaik.

Even if it isn't illegal you shouldn't be doing it.

Id say you would be pulled over if caught but its an extremely bad idea to be wearing earphones while driving.

I see a lot of people listening to iPods recently when driving. Surely the cars have radios ??

I would think it's probably one of those things that comes down to the individual Garda's discretion as to whether it's a distraction or not - and presumably the vast majority of Gardaí would think that it is.

Stupid idea IMO. A better idea is to get an FM transmitter for the ipod, about a tenner on ebay

thanks for the answers, interesting that it is legal.

I don't think its that stupid, for the open road when the car is quiet noisy, instead of having the radio at a hearing damaging high level headphones could be used instead at a much more ear friendly volume.

i think its dangerous , at least with the car radio on you can here other things around you , when the gardai pull you over how you gonna hear there sirens :P

Headphones along with very loud music is not really a good idea while driving or for that matter cycling, you can't be paying full attention to your surroundings when you are paying attention to what your listening to.

and as already stated how will you hear the garda car or fire brigade behind you?

As someone else said above its not a specific offence but certainly not at all advisable.

You could possibly be done for driving without due care and attention or something along that lines

I don't understand the point you are making! You were involved in an accident in a 50kph zone yet you object when the Gardai enforce that limit?

(And I find it difficult to believe that you were 'done' for being 5kph over the limit. The vast majority of people prosecuted for speeding offences are doing way over the limit - half of them doing twice the posted limit).

Not alot of "open road" in Ireland to be honest. I drive up to Dublin from KK at least once a week or else down to Cork and large parts of the road both ways are now motorway and there's no way I'd have ear phones driving on it, changing lanes, keeping an eye on other cars and watching your speed, all needs your attention. I've had a few cars pull out in front of me suddenly either not seeing me or worse ignoring me so you need to be on the ball and ready for stuff like that. I usually turn my radio way down or even off when I reach city west as there's three lanes of traffic and it's usually very busy all the way into town.

Off the motorways and your on to typical irish twisty roads, def not the place to be distracted with headphones. If your car is really that loud when you drive you should prob have it looked at.

the point i am makeing is thatme one mowed me of the road while over the speed limit and got away with it and i was got the same place for 5km over limit like how is that fair law

That argument could be applied to any law in any country in the world. You can't expect the Gardai to be present on every road. perhaps they decided to enforce the speed there as a result of your accident.

I tired those gadgets a few years ago and I was very unimpressed. I got an mp3 stereo installed in my car and it's fantastic. All I have to do is simply hook the ipod up the stereo via jack cable and go to auxiliary. No fiddling around tyring to get the right frequencies. I can now listen to my iPod (at a decent volume) going on long drives in the country, while still paying attention to my surroundings.:)

Do handsfree sets count as headphones?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 162 ✭✭ChristyCent

Anybody who thinks its ok to drive with headphones in should have there license taken away from them
