How to get movies from Drobo Wirelessly to Samsung TV??

    Hi All,

I have an 8TB Drobo drive in my house that stores all my music, movies, tv episodes etc.. It has a Droboshare attached so I can wireless watch downloaded tv episodes etc on my laptop ( i have a gigabit airport extreme so I dont see any lag)..
What I would like to achieve is the possibility to also view this stuff on my tv without having to purchase a usb drive and connect it directly to the tv. Is there are wireless media devices that I can connect to my HDMI port that will allow me to achieve this??

The tv I have is a Samsung 32" Series 6 (bought in 2008). It has a Wiselink usb post but it says that this is only for jpeg and mp3.

I also have an apple tv in another room but not sure if I can stream the stuff from the Drobo through this and to be honest I don't want to convert all my files as most are in .avi or divx format.

    Any Suggestions??

    Thanks
    J

You need a media player to connect to the Drobo and then via HDMI into the TV. There's lot's of them at varying prices, Popcorn Hour, iStar, XTreamer, WD Media Player. Check the threads out here for discussions on each.

Can popcorn hour connect to my drobo wirelessly as the drobo will be downstairs and the tv is upstairs?

Yes, there is a wireless adaptor available. Not so good for hidef though. Details here http://www.popcornhour.com/onlinestore/index.php?pluginoption=productinfo&item_id=9

Are there any cheaper alternatives to the PCH with integrated wireless Media Tank that you would reccomend? Im in the same ship as the OP, have a PCH in the sitting room and just want a simple device with MKV compatibility to stream from it to the bedroom,I know it wont stream HD content over wireless all that well but that doesnt bother me.

iBood have a zyxel dma-1000w on offer today for 80euro but it doesnt play MKV which is a shame.

Another question, is it possible to stream MKV files from a NAS to an xbox360? I know you can setup like a media extender on the 360 but AFAIK it doesnt play MKV's. IF there was a way that it could well then id just move the xbox and get some homeplugs. I also read a bit about TVersity but from what ive read it seems to be far from a foolproof way of streaming, takes ages to buffer up etc.

Thanks for the info. I think the popcorn hour is a bit pricey for my needs considering the cost of the drobo. Is the xtreamer everything it says it is? Some people have complained about the fan noise and the delay in delivery but then that it seems to do everything else. Are there any overwhelming advantages to the popcorn hour over the xtreamer to quantify the
    price difference??
I could purchase 2 xtreamers for sitting room and bedroom for the same price as the popcorn hour.

Does anyone have experience with both??

    Thanks

Check out the reviews here www.mpcclub.com. There's also the ACRyan product too.

The requirement to stream across the network kicks the price up quite a bit. Otherwise I'd say use the WD media player. The new Realtek based systems from ACRyan and XTreamer may be what you need.

AFAIK, you're right on the xbox, the PS3 can but it can't. TVersity is a mish mash of a product and I wouldn't recommend it either, but it does have it's fanbase.

I have the same issue, never heard of the Xtreamer before but it looks promising!

I was hoping to connect the Drobo to my DVD player via the USB in (it supports DivX so will read from an external HD as is). The issue is then that the Drobo can't communicate with the DroboShare as the USB connection is being used by the DVD player :/

Anyone tried a Xtreamer before with success?

    Cool, let us know how you get on. I've just gotten one of these to sort out the USB issue;

But an xtreamer would do the job for watching stuff in other places around the house

Yup will do, if its ronseal (does what it says on the tin) then its an unbelievable price, Ive a PCH-A110 and that cost me over €300 and didnt come with wireless adapter, although after having it for nearly a year now i would have to say its the best €300 ive ever spent without doubt.

Its not being shipped until the 10th of August, and im going away for 3weeks on the 20th so hopefully it will be here before then so i can give it a test. Just looking around now for the cheapest 2.5" drives to stick in it.

I never even saw it took a drive until you mentioned that, thought it just streamed!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,708 ✭✭✭allybhoy

Yup takes a 2.5" drive internally and you can also slave a drive off it via USB. Im going to just pick up a cheap smallish drive just to drop stuff that mightnt stream over wireless, BR content etc.

    Any feedback on the xtreamer?
