BMW wiper speed from a BMW newbie

    Hi,

    I have a BMW 320D, 2004.
Was on the way to work this morning in the rain and I had my wiper speed set to position 2. But it seems like there is no difference between the intermediate position and position 2. Also position 3 seem very slow compared to other cars Ive driven.

Any ideas if this is normal or maybe a fault. Seems a bit strange.

    Cheers,
    T

Does it have automatic (rain-sensing) wipers?

    No it doesnt have this.

Actually it seem like the speed of position 3 is actually what you would expect from position 2

Is it related to the speed of the car by any chance ?

Have a look in the handbook, just to make sure you're not missing anything simple. From memory, the wiper stalk on my mother's E90 is anything but intuitive.

All BMWs since the early nineties have speed sensitive wipers. Suss out if this is your issue.

Have you played around with the "wheel" settings? I hope I'm not patronising you but just want to double check with you about the settings:

    Off - obviously :P
Intermittent - this is controlled by the wheel set into the stalk, and there are 4 settings IIRC ranging from very intermittent (i.e. a big gap between sweeps) and not too intermittent (a short gap between sweeps)

Then there's continuous, the next position of the stalk, and

Fast continuous, the last position of the stalk.

Could it be that your intermittent speeds are at the fastest setting, making it seem similar to the continuous setting?

I noticed this the very first day I sat into my BMW. Speed 2 (intermediate) will automatically drop to Speed 1 (slow) if you're stationary or very slow moving. Once you pick up speed again, the wiper speed will correspondingly increase.
