    August 2009
    _________________

Since I am heading out on holiday for about a week, I am posting this early in case I am delayed getting back (we are not on a tight schedule, and driving, so with the fire risk rather high in our part of the world, I could be several days later than expected getting back).

First, before I post the questions, if any of you stalwart forecasting types would like to help out on the boards.ie forecast thread that I started (and do most of the forecasts on, not necessarily because I want to) then by all means please jump in ... the first two days are the most important part of that, and all that's really needed there in all likelihood. A forecast made late in the evening would be the most helpful, but any timely updates, etc, if there is active weather in particular. Similarity or difference to met Eireann is not a big issue, just go with your forecasting instincts, usually you will find only small differences in any case.

Now, on to August, and please note, you can post your entry as late as August 3rd, end of the day, without penalty because I know a lot of people take holidays at this time of year.

It would be the usual three questions plus two rather interesting ones that apply to later in the month so that entry date doesn't give much of an advantage.

    (1) The mean temp for the month, usual methodology, deg C.

    (2) The highest temp for the month, any met.ie station, deg C.

    (3) The lowest temp for the month, any met.ie station, deg C.

    (4) The strongest wind gust of the period 16-31 Aug at Belmullet (knots)

    (5) The lowest pressure at Belmullet in that same period (mbs)

A sample answer, not to throw anyone off, because it is for some extreme situation more likely in November or January, would be 80 knots and 972 mbs. Knots are about 1.14 times mph and almost double km/hr. Remember, it's a gust, not a sustained wind. Gusts tend to be about 50% higher than sustained winds in a gale.

Okay, nobody needs to enter before the end of July for sure, but the thread is now open for your chat about August if you like.

Looks like most of the regulars have entered already, thanks, but I will keep the "end of Monday 3 Aug" rule in play, so anyone who cares to edit their forecast can do so, I don't see much potential for monthly high or low extremes to give themselves away as per June 1st :D and here's my guesses (Ireland is that fairly big island well to the south of New Guinea, right? because if not, I have an excuse for some of my previous guesses) :)

    1. ... 15.8

    2. ... 27.7 C

    3. ... 4.9 C

    4. ... srongest wind gust 49 kts

    5. ... lowest pressure 979 mbs

Okay, I've had an eye on Belmullet and so far the highest gust was 43 kts on the 21st. Pressure will no doubt go lower than what I've noted so far.

August stats dropped off by rowboat at Boards western outpost, and they look like this ...

    (1) 14.8 C

    (2) 23.8 C (Cork, 11th)

    (3) 6.3 C (Mullingar, 24th)

    (4) 54 knots (with low two days after Bill)

    (5) 988 mbs (with post-trop Bill)

and so later today (in fact tomorrow your time) I will score these in the other thread (scores only).
