    Hi all,

Have been told by a friend of mine who knows a bit about cars that my head gasket is gone in my 00 astra 1.4 16v. He also said the head has to be skimmed whatever that means. Has anyone any idea how much this would roughly cost?

    Cheers

    Jessie

I reckon approx €600, the head has to be skimmed, new gaskets, thermostate, coolant, oil and filter and you also need to do the timing belt kit and waterpump.

it cost my dad about €750 about a year ago in PJ O'Hea's on Cork.

We were quoted €1500 at John McCarthy Motors in Fermoy, so shop around.

the astra is quite a nice one to work on so it should be cheapish (relatively) bout 600. Is the car worth much? If not buy a haynes manual for your car and attempt to fix it yourself. If the head doesnt need skimming its actually not tooo hard to fix. the manual will explain whats involved a bit better. If your not confident with your spanners let a pro do it.

If your cars millage is quite low make sure your mechanic knows why your gasket blew! or it might happen again!

If the engine overheated then the head will need to be skimmed.

Why does your friend think that the gasket is gone? What are the symptoms? It's an expensive repair - especially if it ends up being a mis-diagnosis.......

I had a similar problem with an astra, everyone said it was the head, turned out to be the starter and cost €190 incl parts and labour to get done...so make sure it is def the head that needs fixing
