I got an email saying that Yahoo Geocities is closing on October 26, 2009. I do not have a Geocities website but I frequently visit them. Why are they shutting up and will all the Geocities sites disappear?

Yahoo thought they bagged a bargain when they snapped it up for something like $3.5 billion back in 1998/1999. The web has evolved and Geocities didn't - there's no need for Geocities when people have access to Bebo/Facebook/MySpace etc.

Yahoo made a mistake. How much do you think Geocities would be worth today?

Income from the ads is obviously not paying its way, so nothing or a negative amount.

3.5 billion to nothing or negative in less than a decade. Not as bad as the banks anyway.
