If your looking for something for internet and light college work then a low priced HP or Dell would be a good bet.
One peice of advise i aways give to friends who ask about PCs is to check out the warranty you're getting with it. You can be lucky and never have a problem but if you do, you want to make sure your covered. Company's like Dell and HP source their components from similar manufacturers so the difference between competing priced models is often the after care service they provide.
If you buy direct then in the event of a repair/issue, you deal with them directly, not through a shop.

Dell Vostro Series. Only thing is, its a small business line, can those lines be got personally?

Base model is 450 ex shipping and VAT, but a decent machine for the price. Its minimalistic, but affordable. Little over budget, but you could save....
