Cattle Prices in Old Irish Pounds/Lb

My father who lives in the west of Ireland sells cattle to the abatoir

They quote him in old irish pence/lb

Is this common practice ? Is it against the law ?

It's a bit awkward, because the sales cert is obviouly in Euros, and Kilos, and my father is always out with the calculator converting to Euros from Old Irish Pounds, and from Kilos to Lbs ?

I say to my father "why can't you start thinking in Euros/Kg", but the problem seems to be that other farmers think in £/lb, and thats the price which seems to be discussed.

Is it just in the West of Ireland that people get quoted in £/lb ?
Do the national press talk in £/lb

Am I alone in thinking it's very stupid to be talking about Ire £/lbs, it drives me mad quite frankly !

Put it this way, if someone asks you how far a certain town is, do you say miles or kilometres...........same thing. If you say kilometres, then you must be very young.
I remember when the Euro came in first, there was some head-scratching 'round the mart ringside.
