Battery control system with Wind

    Hi All, looking for some advice. First off I'm a mechanical engineer with limited experience of electrical control systems.

    Basically I have been given the opportunity to do a thesis on developing a control system for battery storage with wind. I will have a computer to send commands to the battery for active power (when to discharge and charge) and reactive power (basically using the battery as a power factor correction capacitor bank).

    If any of you have any experience in this area could you make suggestions how I would approach this thesis or if there are any good sources of info on the net that you may have come across. I'm making up a proposal document at the minute. I've experience in Matlab and I'm brushing up on Homer to model the system.

    Don't know much about this myself, but have a few pointers.

    The main to remember is battery lifespan, so factoring a control to cap the charge capacity at a certain level (lets say 80 - 90%), will ensure that the battery lifetime goes on in the long term. This is becuase it takes alot more work to charge to final stage of the battery then it would on the first stage (check out battery charge exp curve for this).

    You can have an extra control then to judge when more battery power will be needed in emergencies, thus chargin it to 100%, but this should only be done rarely. You should factor in extra battery capacity for this (if it makes economic sense of course :D)
