Sycerika McMahon of Leander Swimming Club made history on the opening day of the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Tampere, Finland, winning a Silver medal in the final of girls 400m Freestyle in a time of 4:16.00. This is a new Irish Junior Record for the youngster, beating Grainne Murphy's previous record set recently at the European Junior Championships by over a second.
McMahon had qualified in first place from the heats this morning in a time of 4:20.86, almost a second ahead of her nearest challenger. However, she was narrowly beaten to 2nd place by Charlotte Bonnet of France who touched in a time of 4:15.88. McMahon also recorded a time of 2:37.00 in the final of the 200m Breaststroke to finish in 7th place after qualifying in 8th place from the heats. This was also a new personal best for McMahon to finish a great first day for the swimmer.
Other members of the Irish squad were also in action today. Nicholas Quinn of Castlebar qualified for the B final in the 200m Individual Medley following a personal best performance of 2:13.21 in the heats. He then went on to better his personal best, finishing 7th in the B final in a time of 2:13.01. Jordan Sloan competed in the 100m Freestyle, finishing in a time of 53.95, a new personal best for the Bangor swimmer.
This major competition will run for 4 days with Irish swimmers in action each day. Tomorrow sees Sycerika continue her charge for medals in the 100m Freestyle and 200m Individual Medley whilst Dan Sweeney of Sunday's Well Swimming Club in Cork will swim in the 200m Breaststroke where he is seeded 6th. Nicholas Quinn is also in action in both the 100m Butterfly and 400m Freestyle.

McMahon adds to Medal Haul at European Youth Olympic Festival

Sycerika McMahon of Leander Swimming Club has today won her second medal, this time a Bronze at the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Tampere, Finland, finishing 3rd in the final of girls 200m Individual Medley. McMahon recorded a new personal best time of 2:18.88 to add to her Silver medal won in the 400m Freestyle yesterday. Having qualified in third place from the heats this morning, McMahon was amongst the favourites for the medals and swam strongly throughout but was narrowly beaten by Germany's Alexandra Wenk (2:16.48) and Cristina Garcia of Spain (2:18.14) in a great final.

Irish lead coach Bobby Madine, who is McMahon's coach at Leander, described the performance as a fantastic result. "Sycerika is now the most medalled Irish swimmer in recent Irish history at the EYOF competition". He went on to say that that he was "delighted with the impeccable behaviour and performances from all 4 Irish swimmers and looking forward to their rest day tomorrow. Swimmers and staff are excited with the prospect of the last two days competition and want to thank Irish Physiotherapist Eimear O'Leary for her support at every session".
McMahon also qualified for the final of the 100m Freestyle in a new personal best time of 58.77 and went on to finish in joint 5th place, again lowering her personal best to 58.05. Martin Burke of the Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI), who is Chef-de-Mission for the entire Irish squad in Finland added that "Pat Hickey (OCI President) has described McMahon's performances do date as excellent and a credit to all the hard work at Swim Ireland over the past number of years".
Dan Sweeney of Sunday's Well in Cork got his EYOF competition started today with huge success, qualifying for the final of the 200m Breaststroke with a new personal best time of 2:21.50. In a very strong field Dan finished in 8th place in the final which was won by Flavio Bizzarri of Italy in 2:15.35.
Nicholas Quinn of Castlebar swam strongly in the 100m Butterfly (1:00.93) and also recorded a new personal best in the 400m freestyle (4:17.80) but did not progress from his heats. He will now concentrate on his final event, the 400m Individual Medley, which takes place on Friday.
Bangor's Jordan Sloan had a rest day today having already recorded a personal best in the 100m Freestyle yesterday and will hope for more success in the 50m Freestyle and 100m Backstroke events later in the week.

Leander swimmer, Sycerika McMahon has collected yet another medal today at the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Tampere, Finland, finishing 3rd in the final of the girls 400m Individual Medley in a fantastic new personal best time of 4:53.15 to add to her Silver & Bronze medals won already this week in the 400m Freestyle & 200m Individual Medley respectively. McMahon swam brilliantly in a thrilling final and was unlucky to miss out on 2nd place, being beaten by the smallest of margins by Carlotta Toni of Italy who touched in 4:53.14. Spain’s Cristina Garcia took gold in 4.50.06.
McMahon also competed in the 200m Freestyle this morning and qualified for the B Final following a 2:07.75 in the heats this morning. The decision was taken by the Irish coaching staff to withdraw her from this race in order to best prepare for the 400 IM final, a strategy that ultimately proved very successful.
