Hi i'm buying my first car and i've spotted an 03 toyota yaris for 4,995 - my dad reckons it's too much -

What do the experts on here think? I know nothing about cars now - i'm just going on how it looks and the good reviews i've heard for yaris cars. I'd obviously have to see it.

    Any thoughts appreciated :)

I'd reckon that price is quite high taking into account the year and relatively high mileage.

    Lower mileage and price

Yes i was thinking that after i actually bothered to look at the mileage - for some reason i thought it was lower! What would be an acceptable price for a car like that would you say? Would i be able to haggle and get the price down?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,822 ✭✭✭✭EPM

Mileage is too high for the price. It needs to be a fair bit cheaper to compensate for that mileage, even though they are well able for it all the same. It would be harder to sell though that if you bought a lower mileage one even a year older.

If it's your first car buy something a bit cheaper that you dont mind getting a knock or two on while you learn. A fiesta 1.25 zetec like this would be my choice. Had one as my first and they are great. That car should be easily bought for under €3k

    Thanks:)

I'll have a good look around anyway

you don't like??! Ok then - yes i was thinking the aul fiesta might be good alright - we'll see.....my dad's excuse for the corsa 'remember your grandad had one of those and when our car broke down he gave us a loan of it to go on holidays.....grand car!' er....

Yaris is a great car, you will rarely have a problem with it and its cheap to run too. Bit light on the road if windy though.
But the price is way too high.

I'd double check with the seller to make sure the mileage is not a typo and they meant 95k kilometers rather than miles.

Definately too much for one with 95k miles though.

Here you go OP, this one is a year younger and has less mileage. Terra is lower spec than a Luna but not enough to pay a premium for it:

Ya they are nice - the renault clio - wouldn't have thought of that but i've heard bad things about renaults. I'm kind changing my mind now and thinking of going for something a bit cheaper plus they have to be in cork because i, eh, live in Cork!

    What about this one?

Ya i know it's the old model but i'd actually prefer it - i think the new one is very boxy or something! I definitely want a small car though - well small enough that it won't be a nightmare to park! I'm liking the renault now though - spotted this one:

There is nothing wrong with a Clio, it is probably the most reliable car Renault makes.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,822 ✭✭✭✭EPM

Clio's are the best of what Renault produce reliability wise. My sister had one and it lasted well considering the abuse it got. They feel like a bigger car when you're inside but a really good small size for learning.

If you get a chance look at the newer model Ibiza from '02 onwards too.

+1 on the Corsa. Avoid like the plague...actually the plague might be preferable. Horrid little yokes

Ah for the money you can get a much better spec. Dynamique is the one to get with the 16valve engine. Super car.

Oh dear god i'm more confused than ever now! Thanks for all the feedback though - so i've gone from wanting a Yaris to maybe a fiesta or clio....I still think i want a yaris though - just not too expensive and not RED! I hate red!

All i know is that i must avoid the Opel Corsa 'like the plague'.....:D

I drove a clio for a year or two (similar to the model you found) and for a small car it was very nice. Fairly nippy, decent stereo, and very comfortable.

I wouldnt get a corsa,a few mechanics and dealers iv talked to told me to stay away from them because their a 3 cylinder engine and unreliable.

I just got my first car for 700e 3 weeks ago.It was a right old bargain and was a fiat punto.

If its your first car id advise you to get a punto because their cheap and you wouldnt care as much if you do a bit of damage to them.

310 for tax though is fairly high:(

Been out to look at a car in that lace once. It's a workshop and forecourt at the back of a house but he's a good selection of cars. Found him pleasant enough too but didnt buy in the end. You're paying a fair premium for the low mileage on that one, maybe too much to be honest.

Even if you bought one with 60k up on it for €2k less you probably would be better off. You'd never spend the premium he's charging on repairs to an avaerage mileage example

Ya you see that's my problem i know nothing about mileage affecting premiums and stuff! But i want to get a car that looks decent and is reliable mainly - not a battered old thing! It is hard to find a yaris that's relatively cheap - like maybe 3500/4000 and isn't red! ha

    Thanks again:)

What about this? It's a facelift model, mileage is average and not really excessive for the year, cash price shoud be lower and horrible hubcaps aside it looks decent enough.

Hi yes i actually have that on my 'list' to check out! No i actually do have a list! ha.

What do you mean by facelift model?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,822 ✭✭✭✭EPM

Most cars are changed slightly at some point in their model life. Just to refresh the looks a little and keep up interest in the product until the new model comes out. The facelift model has slightly different bumpers and headlights and the inside is a darker colour.

    This is the pre-facelift car:

    www.carzone.ie

Only small changes and nothing major really. The facelift car does look better though IMO

I'd be cheeky and try €4.5k and work from there. You never know they might want a sale. If it's warrantied, serviced and NCT'd €5k isn't too bad for an 04. My girlfriend drives one that started out as a her mothers car and then the 3 daughters learned to drive in it. Got awful abuse and never missed a beat and there's well over a 100k miles up on it now

Ya i don't know is it warrantied because the place isn't SIMI reigstered - or does that even make a difference? It doesn't say it on the ad anyway. It'd be great if i could get it for 4,5 though! My dad (god he seems to be coming up an awful lot!) was saying that the most i'd get off would be about 200/300euro.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,822 ✭✭✭✭EPM

Cars like that are selling at the moment so unlike more expensive stuff. If you could settle on 5k that would be good. If you go in expecting 2-300 off thats all you will get. About 10% on a cash sale equates to ~5k so that'd be ok. Wouldn't worry about not being SIMI registered. AFAIK you are entitled to 3 months warranty but get as much warranty as they will give in writing

Well the OP is presumably looking in Cork and that is the cheapest 04 Yaris by €1250...admittedly going on asking prices but it's still the cheapest
