    Hi
My wife has a 00 VW Beetle 2lt petrol. Has a couple of small scratches and a small ding on the side sill. We have a baby now and she needs a car with a bigger boot and more space.
I am thinking about a Passat or Mondeo for her. Would prefer diesel and it needs to be from a dealer so we can trade in the Beetle. how much should she get for the Beetle?
    This Mondeo seems good.

She doesn't want to spend more than about €1500 on top of the trade in.
I think a dealer would sell the Beetle no problem.
    Thanks
    Michael

Would 2k be a reasonable trade in price? Hard to tell. Am i being too harsh on it? It would be hard to shift a 9 year old, 2.0 petrol car. What colour is it?

If you got between 2 -2.5k for the Beetle, that leaves you with around 4k to play with. Does she need a car as big as a Mondeo, if you only have one child?

    What about this?

Or why go diesel at all?

Looking online 00 Beetle are fetching anywhere between 3500 and 6000. It would depned on the millage, extras and how bad the damage is, also for trade will get less than if sold privately. Only thing is I can't imagine there being too much demand for 2.0l these days.

No, they're being advertised at those prices. The prices which they may be sold for could be vastly different.

    Thanks for the opinions.
I think a dealer would shift a Beetle no problem. I would expect to get 2.5K minimum for it.
She doesn't want a small hatchback. I have a 320d which feels very safe and the buggy and bags etc all go in the boot with space to spare so there is no need to put shopping on the seat but she won't drive it. She is afraid of having a bump even though I told her it doesn't matter, it's only a car.
That's why I'm thinking a Passat or Mondeo. Similar size to the 3 series and safe and seem good value these days.

I think your a bit OTT when you say a dealer will shiftit no problem. I'd be surprised if it was sold quickly. However, after a bit of a think, i dont think your far off the mark with 2.5, or maybe even 3k.

Think you'd get that into your bueget at a stretch.

The Mondeo I linked is sold.
That Passat looks good but it is in Clare. I am in Dublin (northside) and want to buy locally in case it needs to be returned to the dealer for any reason.
The Pug looks good but I forgot to mention she doesn't want a silver car:rolleyes:
The Beetle is silver and she never liked the colour. I know this rules out LOTS of cars since nearly everyone bought silver cars in the last 10 years.
Thanks for the help so far everyone.

    Thanks again everyone.
Ended up getting this vectra today.

Great car for the price and got €3k for the beetle as a trade in.
We looked at a few cars in different dealers and there are plenty of bargains around these days. They all offered €3k for the beetle but the vectra was the nicest car we found. 1.8l, ESP, big boot, Aircon, 16" alloys etc. Great condition and only 66K done.

Congratulations, it looks like a fine car. I would just try and verify that mileage if I were you, seeing as that crowd you bought it off were caught clocking cars not so long ago: http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2008/0930/1222719690809.html

In saying that, they've probably learnt their lesson by now and the car could be perfectly genuine.

So you paid €1899 and went up from an '00 to an '02 as well? That's a pretty good deal you got yourself there. Well wear :)

I got a cartell report for the vectra and it checked out ok.
We got a bargain alright. Runs like a new car and has a full service history from new from Crossons opel. Timing belt and water pump changed at 50k.

Before we decided on the vectra we looked at/drove a mondeo, passat, bora and octavia. The vectra was the best by far. Felt much more planted on the road and has very good pickup through the gears. Seems to be a very under rated car and you don't see many of them around.
