a Good telescope ?

A bit like How long is a piece of string ? but what would a good telescope for a beginner to buy ? Budget -- around €300 ... what type of mag. would i get , how would Jupiter , Saturn etc look ? My dad had a telescope years ago that could see the rings of Saturn....
